Sports: Negrense Named as FIFA Referee
Twenty-four year old Jeffrey Golez Velez of Bacolod City was named by the Fédération Internationale de Football Association as one of the three FIFA referees from the Philippines in 2012.
This was disclosed last Saturday by Asean Football Confederation (AFC) Regional Referees Instructor and Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Assessor Dennis Estaniel.
Velez, who is currently a MAPEH Teacher at Don Bosco Technical Institute in Victorias City, only smiled and humbly said that he is happy and honored with the promotion he got from FIFA. He finished BESD-MAPEH from the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos in 2009 and graduated his secondary education from the Negros Occidental High School in 2004. Along Velez are Wilfredo Bermejo from the MPL (Marikina, Parañaque, Ls Piñas) and Kent Gobuyan from the Iloilo Football Association.
On the other hand, based on the memorandum signed by AFC General Secretary Datu Alex Soonay, PFF instructors Estaniel and Montano Mondia were classified as AFC Regional Referees Instructor and National Instructor, respectively.
Estaniel is also the present principal of Bata Elementary School II while Mondia is the current PFF referees department head.* (JGalunanJr/SCOOP-Bacolod)
