Sports: USLS-Nhojs Stuns Talisay for Lead in TKP Class A

University of St. La Salle- Nhojs stunned defending champion Talisay, 114-109 to remain unbeaten in Class A division of the 12th Tan Kek Pin Memorial Basketball Cup at Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung high School Sunday.

This is the second straight wins of USLS-Nhojs Stingers after their win against Fil-Sino/Bmeg/Mang Inasal, 95-82 Saturday. Talisay City also win its match against UNO-R Polvora’s Law Office, 96-91 for its second victory Saturday.

The Stingers key to victory were their running game and timely outside shoting to counter the height and heft advantage of the more seasoned Talisay City squad. Stingers-Nhojs was led by Emman Sevilla who finished with 19 points, highlighted with three triples in the final period. Harvey Eslawa added 18 points,16 of them from free throw line, and Kevin Villafranca made 13 points.

Nikos Cuenca led the Stingers offense to score 11 points, Arturo Cuaresma had 10, and Allen Dionela with 9. Ex- USLS Stingers Rodgie Gelasan paced Talisay with 25, Sonny Abaring and Atoy Salazar added 15 points apiece, Joemel Garrido and Jornel Laborte with 11 points each and Ervin De La Peña with 8.

In the main game, Rogers/Province of Negros Occidental got back on the winning track as they surprised highly fancied JSY Transport in overtime, 97-87. JSY Transport led from the start until Province’s Mark Linaja scored his only basket to give his team its first lead in the game, 77-75 with 3:37 minutes left in regulation.

But Alfie Villariza and Chad Paez responded for JSY to lead with 2 points.The free throws of Province Joemarie Bayhon and Leo Bat-og force the extension at 79- all.
Province shifted its offense to another level in overtime as they scored 18 points against the 8 of JSY to tie with 1-1 win-loss cards.

Joemarie Bayhon and Leo Bat-og shared scoring honors for Province with 19 points each, Rodel Canino and Peewee Demonteverde made 16 apiece, Mark Ramos had 12 and Richard Verayo 8.

Chad Paez paced JSY with 16 points, Pipo Javelona added 13, Michael Macon scored 11, Ruel Balgos and Vengie Vergara had 10 points each, Alfie Villariza and Arnol Laureño had 8 points apiece.

In the curtain raiser, Fil-Sino/Bmeg/Mang Inasal lost to University of Negros Occidental Polvora’s Law Office, 86-79 after missing the services of its four frontcourt players. The UNO-R Rams outscored Fil-Sino for three quarters to take, 68-52 lead before Bmeg/ Mang Inasal rallied but just fell short as time expired.

Colin Testa led Polvora’s balance offensive with 15 points, Joemel Paderog also scored 15, Richer Santillan shot 13 and Tata Javillo made 11. Mang Inasal was led by Robbie Jalando-on with 26, Carl john Oquindo added 16 and Donald Quilantang had 9.

On Saturday, USLS-Nhojs nd Rogers.Province will square off starting at 5:30PM followed by Fil-Sino vs. JSY Transport at 7:00PM in Class A actions.
On Sunday, USLS vs. JSY Transport at 3:0PM follwed by Fil-Sino vs. Talisay City at 4:30PM and Roger/Province vs. UNO-R Polvora Law office at 6:00PM.* (CMGarde/with reports from Stephen Tan)
