Sports: NTU-Tigers Standout Off to London in August
A member of Negros Taekwondo Union-Tigers is set to attend a seminar workshop in taekwondo in London in August along with RP’s 10 best players in various sports to further hone their skills in preparation for national and international competitions.
Irene Therese Bermejo of Trinity Christian School is one of the two NTU–Tigers players that won gold medals in the just-concluded Smart CPG National Memorial Taekwondo Championship held at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Metro Manila recently.
Bermejo won the gold in the pin weight division (42 kilograms below) after outclassing the current junior national team player and ASEAN Taekwondo gold medalist Inna Dionisio. The latter proved to be a tough opponent, but the NTU practitioner showed her class to register the win. It was the second time Bermejo prevailed over Dionisio, the first during the national “Batang Pinoy” held in Naga City last December 10 to 13, 2011.
The other gold medalist is Camille Miraflores of St. Scholastica’s Academy who triumphed in the grade school girls advanced category (128-136 centimeters). Miraflores defeated Lingayen-Milo National Little Olympics champion Joanna Pauline Jubelag of General Santos in the battle for the title. The SSA standout showed her outstanding performances for defeating all her opponents in her bouts from start to finish.
With their victory, the younger NTU - Tigers automatically gain a slot to the February 19, “National Team Selection” to be held at the Philippine Taekwondo Association Central Gym at Rizal Memorial Complex in Vito Cruz, Metro Manila.
Only gold and silver medallists in the Smart CPJ National sponsored taekwondo championships and current members of the RP National Team are qualified to participate in this event.
The two is under the mentorship of NTU head instructor and trainor Jim Jim Chua.* (CMGarde)
