Sports: USLS-B Set to Defend Title in Bayawan Beach Volley
University of St. La Salle team B will have its hand full when they are set to defend their title in the 2012 Bayawan City Women’s Beach Volleyball Invitational slated Saturday and Sunday, February 11 to 12, 2012 at the city’s boulevard.
Bayawan City is a seashore city in Negros Oriental about 102 kilometers south of Dumaguete City and about 278 kilometers from Bacolod City in Negros Occidental.
What more exciting is the increase of this year’s cash prize with P10, 000 is up for grabs for the champion; P 7, 000 for 1st runner-up; P5, 000 for 2nd runner-up; and P3,000 each for placing fourth to eight places. Trophies and medals will also be awarded to the winners.
It was an all USLS team’s appearance last year with Team B of Sheryl Denila and Kay Aplasca defeated USLS A of Patty Orendain and Charmaine Moralde, 25-21, 25-10 in the 6-team participants. The champion received cash prize of P8, 000 and trophy from Bayawan City Mayor Rene G. Gaudiel.
This beach volleyball tournament is an annual event as part of Bayawan Fiesta Day celebration on February 17 to 18, 2012 and a sports tourism project of the city.
A team from Singapore will join this year’s event along with teams from Cebu, the University of San Carlos and University of San Jose- Recoletos; Foundation University-Bayawan, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, USLS-A and team from Negros Occidental Volleyball Association (NOVA).
The participation of Singapore team is expected to draw more spectators in the province and neighboring islands of Cebu and Mindanao.
This women’s beach volleyball tournament was made thru the efforts of James Ludweg I. Geconcillo, event coordinator, Joe Guirit of Dumaguete City Sports Office as tournament manager and former Philippine Volleyball Federation President Roger A. Banzuela as Chairman, Invitation Communication.
Geconcillo disclosed, sports are supplementary activities that will add colors to the city’s celebration and bring further pleasure both to the city’s constituents and the local and foreign visitors alike.*
