Sports: Negros Junior Cagers Ready to Defend WVRAA Meet Crown
The 12-man Negros Occidental Secondary Boys Basketball Team is on top shape and ready to defend its Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association title when this year’s edition of this annual sports competition kicks off on March 12, 2012.
The team mentored by Dennis “Jack” Tumayan will be bannered by West Negros University’s Renz Solomon, John Daniel Javelosa, Miguel Giurnela, Kevyn Parra, Jude Junto, Josue Segumpan and Kraniel Villoria; Bacolod Tay Tung High School’s (BTTHS) Gerard Dipol; University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos’ John Toral; University of St. La Salle’s Giovanni Laguyo; and Living Heritage’s Brian Descotedo and Angelo Robillo.
With the team’s composition, Tumayan is optimistic that they can defend the title at home, however he is still cautious as their rival Iloilo squad is also preparing to challenge them.
And to ensure that the squad will meet what is expected from them, the team regularly holds their training at the WNU covered court.
On the other hand, like the secondary boys, the Negrense cagebelles of Ericson Rios has also been very busy in their preparation.
The team is composed of standouts from the UNO-R led by Christine Marie Aliermo, Clarice Agape Aujero, Johana Lyn Divinagracia, Camille Jan Panisa, Rizza Mariz Cenabre and Antonielle Kaye Berduque; St. Joseph School-La Salle’s (SJS-LS) Trixie Marie Antiquiera and Lyn Heart Berina; St. John’s Institute’s (SJI) Kristine Gabrielle De Asis, Mansilingan Christian Academy’s (MCA) Deanna Faith Ang, Ramon Torres National High School’s (RTNHS) Melchar Jerez and Aguisan National High School’s (ANHS) Jonalyn Lacson.
Rios, who likewise the Sports Director of the UNO-R, earlier said that though they don’t have the standards in which to measure the strength of his team and haven’t scouted their regional rivals but they are confident that they can defend their ground.
And since it was in 2004 when the event was last played, Rios and his team had couple of tune-up matches to ensure the competitiveness of his squad for the upcoming competition.* (JSGalunanJr/SCOOP-Bacolod)
