The 5th Balbagan Sports Festival 2012 in Binalbagan town opened with a big bang at the newly-renovated Binalbagan Covered Court last Monday.

It started with a colorful parade of athletes with their participating teams headed by Mayor Alejandro "Bebot" Y. Mirasol, Vice-Mayor Emma-nuel I. Aranda, Sports Commissioner Antonio De Dios, SBM Henry Tajonera, chairman, Committee on Sports; SBM Sarah Marie M. Trio, SK Federation President; SBMs Nene Villasis, Samuel Gabaran, Norberto Morano and Dondon Villafranca; Barangay and SK officials, coaches, managers, Binalba-gan PNP, Bureau of Fire Protection, Patik Kawayan of Barangay Paglaum, Patik Kawayan of Binalbagan South Elementary School passing along the main thoroughfares of Binalbagan.

Mayor Mirasol in his message said, "this is a friendly competition among the bar-angays of Binalbagan and you are all winners, selected by your barangay and SK officials to compete in this basketball tournament. The commitment, unity, support and cooperation of barangays and SK officials, coaches, managers and players made this tournament successful. P200,000. 00 worth of infrastructure projects for each category will be the grand prize for the champion of this sports event," Mayor Mirasol announced.

SBM Henry Tajonera, chairman, Committe on Sports in his welcome message said, "For the first time, we have expanded the participation of municipalities of Hinigaran, Moises Padilla, La Castellana, Pontevedra; and cities of Himamaylan and Kabankalan.

It likewise propagates and promotes sports tourism in our Municipality. This is also a venue where we can scout our own players for the LGU and eventually in national sports events."

SBM Nene Villasis in behalf of Vice-Mayor Emmanuel I. Aranda thanked the participants and supporters "for making this noble project successful."

Sports Commissioner Antonio De Dios of the Binalbagan Sports Association encouraged the participants to continue their values of discipline and obedience to the tournament rules and regulations.

De Dios added, "With teamwork, discipline and unity, you have all the good reasons to play and enjoy the games. You should also consider yourself as an `actor’ where you give happiness and entertainment to our people, friends and guests who would always come to Binalbagan."

The Binalbagan Sports Association hopes and prays that the sports tournament will be expanded and cover the whole 5th District of Negros Occidental if ever the brains and the man behind the success of this worthy endeavor- Mayor Bebot Mirasol- by people’s choice will be the next Congressman of the 5th District of Negros Occidental.
