It’s Earth Day this weekend and special events are in line aimed at creating and spreading awareness about the environment. The public is invited to join the celebration in honor of the one world we live in: Mother Earth.

With the slogan "Earth Day, Everyday, Everywhere," the Bacolod-Negros Occidental Earth Day Convenors, in partnership with SM City Bacolod, call on everyone to join in Bacolod’s celebration with environmental programs that are sure to be fun and even profitable to the pocket and the health.

Today marks the opening of Trash to Cash, an SM-initiated waste market fair at the North Wing parking area where everyone is invited to bring in their junk and recyclable materials that they can sell. SM’s partner junk dealers shall buy recyclable papers, cans, plastic bottles, metals and even unusable materials that require special disposal like car batteries and electronic wastes. Sell your trash, bring home cash and get a free Eco Bag too! Trash to Cash Waste Market Fair opens at 9AM till 2PM.

On April 21, the Tree-K Run will take off at 6AM at the North parking area of SM. Walkathon and running enthusiasts from all levels (students, beginners or professionals) can look forward to a fun morning around the city in the run for the environment. Modest registration fees ranging from P50 to P350 allows participants entry in the 3 to 5 kilometer events. In the afternoon, Bacolod biking enthusiasts will be joined by GMA’s Survivor Philippines 2008 Sole Survivor, JC Tiuseco, in the Ride for the Climate event. All bikers are welcome to participate free event, which will take off at the SM North Carpark at 5PM. JC Tiuseco will lead the group around the city to ride for health and for the climate. Registration starts at 4PM at the SM North Carpark. Ride for the Climate is free to join.

On Earth Day itself, April 22, the Earth Day Convenors and SM City Bacolod band together in a walk for the environment starting 5PM. Dubbed One Earth, the walk will honor the planet as the source of life. It is an event free for everyone to participate and a call for all citizens of the Earth to be environmental advocates in their own little way.

For registration and more information about Earth Day events, interested persons may call SM Bacolod at telephone number 468-0168.*
