Sports: WV Athletes Pass Palaro Screening
The 404 of Western Visayas (Region 6) has passed the screening conducted by the National Screening and Accreditation Committee following their visit the region’s billeting center at San Carlos City Central School 11 in Pangasinan yesterday, according to Negros occidental Provincial Information Office head Karen Dinsay.
Dinsay said the 36 members of the NSAC, composed of representatives from 17 regions and Department of Education Central Office was welcomed by Western Visayas Regional Sports School head, Juliet Braga.
The NSAC Region 6 representative is Agustin C. Cabahug, Jr., Administrative officer V, Personnel Section, who examined the documents.
Braga assured the committee that the athletes’ documents were already pre-screened in accordance to the NSAC standards.
Cabahug, on the other hand, disclosed they meticulously screened the eligibility of all the athletes with emphasis on the dental and medical records to ensure their fitness to join the competition.
Screening of athletes have been strict and those who failed to pass the screening could be replaced right away before May 3, according to the Palaro screening committee whose members came mostly from Department of Education Central office and one representative from each region.
The first batch of WV contingent left last April 29 with the last batch to leave on Friday, May 4 to include medical team and other officials.
WV team placed second after garnering overall 479.50 behind overall champion National Capital Region earning a total of 572.66 points.
The third place is occupied by Region IV-A or Calabarzon team with 429.50 points while Region VII or Central Visayas team placed fourth with 329.00 points.
Region X or Northern Mindanao team was fifth with 172.00 points while Region XII or CARAGA Region team has 146.16, on the sixth place.
Seventh place is Region XI or Davao team with 141.25 total points and Region III or Central Luzon Region with 141.00 point overall, as eight placer.
Region IV-B or MIMAROPA team is ninth place with 102.50 points and rank 10 is seized by Zamboanga Peninsula or Region IX with 79.91 points.
NCR athletes have dominated the Palaro for several years. WV is a force to reckon with in athletics when they snatched the elementary division from NCR in Naga City Palaro in 2006.
Seventeen sports disciplines will be contested in the week-long sports competition in the DepEd-run annual sports conclave in the grassroots.*
