Sports: 2012 PNG Opens Today in Dumaguete, Manila
The 2012 Philippine National Games (PNG) will open today in two separate venues, Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental and in Manila.
Negros Occidental and Bacolod City will send separate athletes to the event, with Bacolod to bank on athletics team from Bacolod Tay Tung High School (BTTHS) that won the overall championship in Visayas leg Batang Pinoy also held Dumaguete last year.
Negros Occidental will also send athletes in three events in athletics. However, they will concentrate in boxing sending 6 male boxers and a lone female boxer to compose the Negros First team. Boxing will be held at Rizal Memorial Stadium in Manila.
Angel Verdeflor, Negros Occidental Sports coordinator said the Negros First boxing team will include Aljun De Oro (46 kilograms), Alvin Sibugan (49kgs), Rafael Sueño (52kgs), Ernesto Ibañez (56 kgs) and James Calago (60kgs). The lone female boxer is Riza Pasuit to complete in the 57 kilograms.
This annual event has 38 events with 23 to be hosted by Dumaguete City. The events are arnis, athletics, badminton, chess, basketball, karatedo, pencak silat, softball, sepak takraw, swimming, dancesports, weightlifting, lawn tennis, beach volleyball and judo.
More than 5,000 athletes and officials from the 17 regions all over the country including members of the Philippine national training pool are seeing action in the revival of the competition considered as the national open championships in the country.* (CMGarde)
