Sports: Gov Pushes for Negros Bids for 2013 Palaro
Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo G. Marañon, Jr., is hell-bent on pushing for the hosting of 2013 Palarong Pambansa in the international standard Panaad Park and Sports Stadium at Barangay Mansilingan, Bacolod City. Negros Occidental has the advantage of winning the bidding over rival Cebu City, which is trying to be the stumbling block of the province to get the nod of the Department of Education. Cebu City and which has hosted the Palarong Pambansa in 1994. However, Negros Occidental and Bacolod City already had it four times, first in 1974 and 1979 at the Paglaum Sports Complex while two others in 1998 and 2000 Centennial Palaro at Panaad Park and Sports Stadium.
Aside from its international standard sports complex, Negros Occidental has ready facilities that can cater to about 16 sports disciplines and billeting centers just a few minutes ride from the venue or just even a walking distance for 17 regional delegations throughout the country.
Last year, Department of Education Secretary, Bro. Armin Luistro already assured Gov. Marañon of the 2013 hosting during a brief meeting.
To insure the hosting of 2013 Palarong Pambansa, Western Visayas Regional Department of Education has already mopped up plan of having early preparation of the bidding that may take place sometime in August or September.
Last week, the Regional Office headed by Regional Director Mildred Garay met with different supervisors in Boracay Island to prepare all the requirements of the bid. All the school heads held a post-evaluation to insure the chances of winning next year’s hosting.
Garay instructed them to submit all possible billeting centers accessible to all regions.
She will meet with Governor Alfredo G. Marañon, Jr., this week to form steering committees to plan together hosting of Palarong Pambansa.
