Events: TOWNS Search Inviting Negrense Women Nominees
The Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service (TOWNS) Foundation is inviting Negrenses to nominate their women leaders and achievers in any field for the 2013 batch of national awardees.
In partnership with the Metrobank Foundation and Metrobank Card, the 14th Search for the Outstanding Women in the Nation’s Service is now open for nomination, said Dr. Aura Matias, chair of the 2013 TOWNS Search.
Matias, also a TOWNS awardee in the field of Industrial Engineering in 2004 and dean of UP College of Engineering, held a press conference in Bacolod yesterday, to announce the search. She was accom-panied by Dr. Ma. Victoria Abesamis, Nominations Committee member of the TOWNS Search. Abesamis is the chief of Medical Professional Staff at East Avenue Medical Center and was a TOWNS awardee in the field of medicine in 2001.
Held only every three years, the TOWNS award is presented to outstanding Filipino women who have contributed positively to strengthening national capability and shaping the nation’s future.
Matias said the Nominations Committee decided to come to Bacolod to invite nominees for the TOWNS, as only two Bacolodnons were able to receive the TOWNS award since 1974.
The TOWNS awardee from Bacolod are entrepreneur Millie Kilayko and former Bacolod Mayor Luzviminda Valdez. Kilayko was awarded in 1995, while Valdez received the award even before she became a mayor. Kilayko and Valdez were also the lone awardees in the Visayas.
Matias said there could be more potential awardees in Bacolod and the Visayas, only that people here may not have heard of this award and therefore were not able to nominate deserving women.
They will also campaign for more nominations in Mindanao as only two from there were given such award since its inception.
The TOWNS search is open to Filipino women, here and abroad, aged 21 to 45 years, who made a special mark in their fields. They must possess a pioneering spirit as shown by the projects that they have initiated in the service to the country.
Deadline of nominations will be on August 9, while the awarding will be on the last week of October in Malacañang.
Nomination forms, which are downloanable from the TOWNS website, www.towns.com.ph, should be filled out by the nominator, and can be emailed to the TOWNS Secretariat at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com or fax to 02-8331125 or 02-9224714.
In Bacolod, nomination forms can be obtained from and sent to Kilayko’s Office, the Negrense Volunteers Foundation, at 208 Virgen sang Barangay Building at 6th-Lacson Sts. or email to firstname.lastname@example.org. It can also be submitted to any Metrobank branch in Bacolod.
To date, a total of 149 outstanding women have received the TOWNS award. The illustrious list includes Lorna Kapunan (law), Rina Jimenez-David (women’s right advocacy), Olivia "Bong" Co (sports), Leticia Ramos-Shahani (foreign service), Lilia de Lima (law), Mona Valisno (education), Teresita Ang See (cultural integration), and Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno (law).
Interestingly, Sereno chairs this year’s selection committee and the final judging will be held at the Supreme Court, Matias said.*
