Local News: Cong. Albee Benitez Keynotes PHILSUTECH Convention in Cebu

Negros Occidental Third District Congressman Alfredo Benitez challenged the more than one thousand officials, delegates, exhibitors and guests to the 59th Annual National Convention of the Philippine Sugar Technologists Association (PHILSUTECH) in his keynote address at the formal opening of convention yesterday (August 22, 2012) at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City.
"By 2015, if we do not see even a slight change in our policy environment, we will be more than vulnerable to our competitors in the world Market. We cannot be complacent. It is time for us to realize that we cannot survive with a business as usual policy. Reforms must be made and it must be made now."
Congressman Benitez rallied the various stakeholders of the sugar industry from all over the country as he reported on the salient features of House Bill 6113 or the SugarCane Industry Development Act.
He stressed that the Bill recognizes the necessity of structural change translated by diversification of the sugar industry, further emphasizing that the vision of the Bill is to transform the industry into a multi-product industry.
Congressman Benitez announced that HB 6133 has been recently passed in two of the three committees where it was referred to in Congress, and will soon be tackled in the Committee on Appropriations. He is hopeful that the measure will be passed before the end of the 15th Congress.
The PHILSUTECH convention guests and participants were welcomed by Cebu Governor Gwen-dolyn Garcia and Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama. Also leading the convention are PHILSUTECH Chairman of the Board Primitivo Rivera and president Mario Palma. Convention Chairman is Linley Retirado.
The opening program was followed by Divisional Technical Sessions and Exhibitors Innovative Technology Presentations to be capped by a general assembly tomorrow, August 24 and the closing ceremonies that will see the proclamation of the newly-elected directors of PHILSUTECH.
