Degamo Opposes Mabinay as NIR Regional Center

Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo is against making Mabinay town as the base of the regional offices for the Negros Island Region (NIR).

BIG VISAYAS FOUR. The four Visayas governors, seated from left, Roel Degamo of Negros Oriental, Alfredo Marnon, Jr. of Negros Occidental, both from Region 18, and Leopoldo Dominico Petilla of Leyte, Region 8, and Edgar Chatto of Bohol, Region 7, with NEDA directors and staff from the four Visayas regions, at the close of the 2nd Visayas RDCom meeting held at the Ricardo Hall of L’Fisher Hotel in Bacolod City yesterday.*

Degamo yesterday said he is already happy with the current set up where 16 regional offices of national agencies are based in Dumaguete City and those in Negros Occidental, while 17 national agencies are based in Bacolod City.

Mabinay sits on the boundary of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental.

He pointed out that Mabinay is two hours land travel away from Dumaguete City.

“After we transact business what then? There are no malls is Mabinay,” Degamo said.

He added that with the regional offices based in Dumaguete City, after one finishes transacting business “there are many malls in Dumaguete”.

Degamo also said regional directors who are based in Bacolod can always go to Dumaguete and vice versa.

He also claimed that he has already identified a vacant lot near the Capitol where the regional offices can be constructed.

Meanwhile, Degamo said he hopes to be in a position to recommend regional directors who will be based in Negros Oriental and not wait on who will the national agency appoint.

So far, he said, he is going along fine with Marañon as far as the transition process of the NIR or Region 18 is concerned.*
