It undermines sugar industry, sugarcane growers and farmworkers

The KILUSANG PAGBABAGO - NEGROS ISLAND REGION (KP - NIR) strongly protests the massive importation and use of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) by various industrial users and food processors.

HFCS poses a clear and imminent danger in general to the Philippine sugar industry, and in particular, to the millions of small sugarcane growers and farm workers and their families in Negros island who depend on sugar for their survival.

A labor group hit President Rodrigo Duterte for not signing the P2,000 Social Security System (SSS) pension hike for senior citizens.

Winnie Sancho, secretary-general of the General Alliance of Workers Asso-ciation (GAWA) said it is “very demoralizing” that Duterte has not complied with his campaign promise of signing the pension hike.

Sancho pointed out that the senior citizens have put a lot of trust with the president over the pension hike.

A man who failed to come home after he went to Cadiz City to consult an eye doctor was found dead around 7:00 Thursday morning floating at Himogaan River in Sagay City.

The victim was identified as Nelson Deguira, 58, married of Purok Ulontawo in Barangay Himogaan Baybay, Sagay City in Negros Occidental.

His relatives said he had a problem in his eye and was slightly blinded so he went to Cadiz City alone to have his eye examined but failed to come home in the evening.

He may have lost his way and fell to the river, it was reported.* (CMGarde)

Six drug suspects were nabbed, while the two targets were able to escape in a buy bust operation by San Carlos City PNP at San Juan Tunga in Barangay 5 around 8:30 in the evening Friday.

Police operative is led by Police Inspector Lamberto Mirande, Deputy Police Chief of San Carlos City PNP and confiscated about 3 grams of suspected shabu with market value of P30, 000 and other drug paraphernalia and cash amount of P200 in different denominations.

Two were killed in road mishap, including a minor in Cadiz City and EB Magalona Friday.

The victim was identified as Ronnie Guarino Sabacan, 50 of Hacienda Bayabas in Barangay Daga and Graig Gian Gam Sayo, 9 of St. Michael Subdivision in barangay Alicante in EB Magalona, Negros Occidental.

Sabacan was on his way home on board his motorcycle when he slipped to a zigzag in Sitio Sambag at Barangay Tiglawigan, Cadiz City around 8:00 in the evening. He hit a cemented road and was rushed to Cadiz City Emergency Clinic but was declared dead-on-arrival

A lending collector was held up by two unidentified suspects, mauled and hog tied and dumped inside a sugar cane field in Sitio Canjacap in Barangay Tapi, Kabankalan City in Negros Occidental 1:25 P.M. Thursday.

Police Superintendent Rhea Santos, Kabankalan City PNP identified the victim as Steve Lazarito Joneo, 27, and resident of Barangay Talubangi in Kabankalan City.

A 69-year-old man was found dead near the waiting shed in Purok Eucalyptus in Barangay Calumangan in Bago City 9:00 in the morning Friday.

Superintendent David Cachumbo, Jr., Bago City PNP chief identified the victim as Ernesto De Leon Vergara, and resident of the place.

He was found lying on his back at the grassy area of the place near the waiting shed. His wife Leticia said that the victim is suffering from hypertension and one time he felt dizziness and become unconscious.

A man and his cousin who was about to buy hogs in the public market of Barangay Santol in Binalbagan, Negros Occidental was killed by their protagonist because of family feud around 8:00 in the morning Friday.

Chief Inspector Anthony Grande, Binalbagan PNP chief identified the victim as Noriel Alvarez Nagaret, 20, single of Sitio Sumilang in Barangay Cansalongon, Isabela town.

His cousin, Rowell Alvarez escaped the carnage.

Forty special children of E.B. Magalona, including those who have autism, cerebral palsy and hearing impairment, among others, will start going to an education center located in their own municipality starting today.

According to Principal Rowena Pavillar-Bulfa, the Special Education Center of E.B. Magalona Elementary School, which will start holding classes or sessions this Monday, had a launching program last January 5, after months of preparation that included listing and mapping of special children, and orientation of teachers and other stakeholders.

Edgardo Narido Cervantes, 54, married of Hacienda Nieva in Sitio Mambato in Barangay To-oy in Himamaylan City was arrested by Regional Intelligence Unit (RIU-18) and Himamaylan City PNP in his house around 2:00 in the afternoon Friday.

The 120th death anniversary of the country’s foremost hero, Dr. Jose P. Rizal was commemorated at the Rizal Park fronting the Rizal Elementary School in Bacolod City complete with flag hoisting, floral offering and re-enactment of the life and death of the national hero.

Bacolod City Lone District Congressman Greg Gasatay led the city and the Department of Education officials in the hoisting of the flags and floral offering at the Statue of Dr. Jose P. Rizal.

Social Security System (SSS) members will now be able to calculate their projected benefits, especially their retirement pension, through its Simulated Retirement Benefit Calculator.

Senior Communications Analyst Janice Diaz said the calculator can be used to check their simulated benefits based on their latest posted contributions.

“You would also know how much your projected savings if you wish to increase or reduce your contributions,” Diaz told PIA in a radio interview.

The online calculator was launched back in November last year.
