An unidentified retired Army soldier from Davao province shot and wounded three persons in Kabankalan City Monday night in Sitio Utod, Barangay 1, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

Superintendent Rhea Santos, Kabankalan City PNP chief identified the victims as Gerald De la Cruz, 17; Bernard Rivera, 23 and a tricycle driver identified as Daniel Polsolar.

They, however, sustained slight gunshot wounds in the arms as the suspect had no intention to inflict damages to them, according to Santos claiming the suspect used a .45 caliber firearm.

All members of the Visayas bloc in congress are co-authors of the creation of Negros Island Region (NIR), with Cong. Mercedes Alvarez from south Negros as main author.

Bacolod Cong. Greg Gasataya said, the executive order signed by then president Benigno Aquino creating NIR can be repealed anytime. However, if it is a law, it will not be easily repealed. Therefore, a law enacted by congress and senate is needed for the NIR, Gasataya said.

The police personnel in Negros Occidental “is still on high morale” amid the continuing cleansing of the ranks of the police force, Senior Supt. William Señoron, provincial police director.

Señoron was reacting to the revelations of self-confessed drug personality Ricky Serenio who had tagged some police officers assigned to the provincial police office as well as the Bacolod City Police Office.

“We will wait until he reduces his claims into an affidavit,” he said.

He confirmed that Serenio is also their target as a Level 3 drug personality.

About P50, 000 worth of suspected shabu was confiscated from a drug personality nabbed in a buy bust operation in Barangay 4, Bacolod City, while three others were arrested in separate operations in Barangay Singcang-Airport Monday.

Ariel Totoc, of Purok Lubi in Barangay 3 was arrested by City Anti-Illegal Drug Special Operation Task Group (CAIDSOTG) led by Senior Inspector Ramil Bustamante in front of Andres Bonifacio Elementary School (ABES) in Barangay 4.

Bustamante said they put under surveillance for three days the suspect before they conduct the operation.

Ricky Serenio, a top illegal drug personality in the Negros Island Region yesterday named the two media broadcasters allegedly from Bombo Radyo whom he claimed have been receiving payola from the Beria drug group operating in the region.

Serenio in a follow up interview by Bombo Radyo identified the two as a certain “Joelibs” and Edwin de Pedro.

He claimed further that Joelibs was a former Barangay Kagawad who ran for Barangay Captain in Barangay Bata and was allegedly given campaign money by the Berya Group.

Due to his health condition, a man from Ilog town ended his life by hanging inside their house in Purok 4, Barangay Dancalan Sunday evening.

The body of Atilla Bergantinos, 33, male, married was found by his relatives Monday morning.

He was rushed to Lorenzo Zayco Memorial District Hospital but was declared already dead.

It was learned that Bergantinos had a mental disorder that may have led to end his own life by hanging.

His family also ruled out foul play in the suicide.* (Cyrus M. Garde)

A person who sells suspected shabu was arrested inside the comfort room of Victorias City Commercial Complex in Barangay 2 around 1:00 p.m. Monday.

Superintendent Herman Garbosa, Victorias City PNP chief identified the suspect as Arsenio Aringo, 21, of Relocation Site, Barangay 21, Victorias, Negros Occidental.

He sold to a poseur-buyer a small sachet of suspected shabu in exchange for P300 marked money. Three other small sachets were confiscated from them when frisked.

A man who climbed a Marang tree in Barangay Dian-ay, Escalante City to trim its branches was electrocuted Monday afternoon.

John Wenceslao, 32 years old, married, was rushed to Cadiz District Hospital but was declared dead on arrival by attending physician. He sustained third degree burns all over his body.

Wenceslao decided to climb the Marang tree in order to clear its branches from the hanging electricity wires, but unintentionally touched the live wire of NONECO.

Police are now trying to determine if NONECO has liability to the incident.*

Amid concerns from sugar industry stakeholders over the entry of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) into the country, Negros Occidental Board Member Alain Gatuslao yesterday said he is planning to conduct an investigation into the matter.

“We will check existing ordinances for possible violation of the ordinance banning the entry into the province genetically modified organisms. If allowed by the members of the Committee on Laws, we can investigate in aid of legislation,” Gatuslao said.

With three more months to go before classes end the National Academy of Scientist and Technology (NAST) is urging the students anew to take Science and Technology (ST) courses.

There is money in Science and Technology,” Dr. Luningning Samarita-Domingo, Director of the NAST said after noting that most students would rather take other courses or go abroad to earn a bigger salary.

“There is future in Science and Technology if you focus on it, not only for yourself and your family but also for this country. We need scientists,” she stressed.
