‘NAMELESS CANNED GOODS.’ These canned goods - sardines, corned beef, tuna, milkfish, meatloaf, milk, etc., were stripped of their paper labels by two tiny tots who enjoyed removing and tearing the labels off. Unless some markings remain on the cans, nobody can readily guess, if at all, what each one may contain. Lesson #1, keep them out of young children’s reach, and #2, let us urge or remind manufacturers and packaging firms to always leave some description markings on these for identification in case the paper labels are removed. Sugar planters are not the only affected by the reported entry of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) into the Philippines as even labor groups in the province are planning to launch a mass action against beverage companies.

Hernani Braza of the local chapter of the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) said their members as well those of the small planters groups have expressed concern over this development.

Kabankalan City Mayor Isidro Zayco is standing firm on his decision on not running anymore for any elective post after his term expires on 2019.

Zayco is on his last term as Kabankalan City mayor.

“I have already served my city for 18 years and has served the provincial government as governor, vice governor and board member. I want to retire from politics,” Zayco said.

He said that he wants to enjoy life “as a private citizen.”

Zayco will turn 72 on 2019.

A notorious member of “akyat bahay” with string of cases escaped from detention at Police Station 7 in Barangay Mansilingan around 12:00 dawn Sunday but was later recaptured around 5:30 P.M. the same day at Purok Caingin, Barangay Singcang-Airport, Bacolod City.

Arvin Martinez, 20, alias “Spiderman” made good his escape by sawing off the iron grills in his cell when policemen went out for roving patrol.

Bacolod City Councilor Ricardo Tan yesterday denied allegations that he is the one who maneuvered the dismissal order of the Office of the Ombudsman against Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia and nine others relative to the city’s acquisition of the furniture and fixtures of the anew Government Center in 2008.

“Those are lies, irresponsible and baseless accusation against me that’s why it makes me sick,” Tan said.

The Councilor made the explanation after reports circulated that he is interested of the dismissal of Leonardia as he will directly benefit from it.

St. John’s Institute (SJI), through its Board of Trustees (BOT), is seeking the reversion of the Queen of Peace Church, more popularly known as Hua Ming Church, from a parish to a chapel from the Diocese of Bacolod.

SJI Board resident Cesar Villanueva said the move, supported by the SJI community, is in keeping with the wishes of the late Msgr. John Su, one of the school’s founders, to bring the Church back to the school to serve as the foundation of the students’ growth in the Catholic faith.

Sugar industry stakeholders will meet today to discuss plans to prevent the worsening crisis due to expanding industrial use of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) by industrial users, particularly beverage companies.

According to industry leaders, the sugar industry lost some P10.5 billion as import of HFCS more than tripled in the past year.

Labor group, Nacusip-TUCP is joining the meeting, warning that import substitution by big beverage companies is affecting small farmers, agrarian reform beneficiaries and industry workers.

A man with arrest warrant for violation of RA 9165 in La Castellana was arrested inside Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital Sunday evening.

The suspect was identified as Reneboy Ortaliza Sr., 52 years old, of San Juan, Barangay Robles, La Castellana.

La Castellana PNP coordinated with Police Station 2 to serve the arrested warrant issued by Judge Cyclamen Jison-Fernandez on January 29, 2016.

He is facing violation of Section 11 of the RA 9165 with bail bond fixed at P40, 000.*(CMGarde)

Two lovers died after their motorcycle hit a mango tree near the cemetery in Crossing Barangay Aguisan, Himamaylan City around 6:30 a.m. Sunday.

Police Inspector Raymundo Franco, Himamaylan City PNP deputy police chief identified the victims as Jayvan Calderon 20, of Barangay Santol, Binalbagan town and Aira Siatita Amores, 18, of Sitio Punta Talaban, Barangay Talaban, Himamaylan City.

The two sustained fatal head and body injuries and died on the spot. Barangay Tanods brought them to the nearest hospital but was declared already expired.

The Bacolod City Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) approved on its first reading an ordinance that will increase the penalty of jaywalking during its regular session Wednesday.

Councilor Caesar Distrito, Chairperson of the Committee on Laws and the author of the proposed ordinance said that it is high time that the penalty for jaywalking should be increased as a way to discipline pedestrians to observing traffic rules and regulations.

Three unidentified suspects held up the driver and his companion in Barangay Balicotoc, hinterland Barangay in Ilog town Saturday afternoon.

Police Chief Inspector Nerito Lobrido, Ilog PNP chief identified the driver of the grocery delivery van as Crisologo Resano, of Barangay Tabu also of the same town.

He told police investigator that they were to deliver the order of a store owner in the area when the three suspects arrived and announce the hold up.

The suspects heldup the helper, “Dante” and the son of the owner identified as Kevin Dumagat.
