The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) has no power to stop the importation of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), according to its assistant administrator for the Visayas yesterday.

Lawyer Ignacio Santillana said, “After we reviewed our charter, it was not expressly stated.”

The concern over the entry of HFCS was discussed yesterday by sugar industry stakeholders with members of the Sanggunian Panlalawigan.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia believes that despite the recent robbery hold up in one of the Chinese businesses in town last Christmas, Bacolod is still peaceful. “It was an isolated case and the police have already identified the suspects, and that the case is being prepared for filing against the suspects,” he said.

All but one police chief in the province of Negros Occidental showed their unequivocal support to beleaguered police provincial director Senior Supt. William Señoron after Ricky Serenio, a self-claimed “drug boss” linked him to the illegal drugs trade.

The police chiefs in the province gathered at the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office (NOPPO) yesterday and signed a resolution “declaring our unequivocal support in the leadership of Senior Supt. William Señoron as the acting provincial director of Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office.”

Police authorities have tagged two AWOL policemen and three John Does in the robbery of JDS Mindoro Enterprises at Luzuriaga-Locsin Sts., Bacolod, killing its owner and guard and wounding others last December 26, 2016 at 7:30 in the evening.

Police Senior Inspector Eugene Tolentino, chief of Police Station 1 said they already filed the case of robbery with homicide and frustrated homicide against the suspect Tuesday at the Bacolod City Prosecutor’s Office.

Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. yesterday said he will seek for an investigation into the circumstances leading to the protective custody of self-confessed drug personality Ricky Serenio by two Negros mayors.

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) launched on Wednesday, January 18, a project that would provide free skills training for inmates at the Makati City Jail and their respective families simultaneous with the opening of the “Integration Through Skills Development Project for Inmates and Families.”

TESDA Director General Guiling “Gene” Mamondiong also said that they will also provide free skills and trainors’ training for the staff members of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).

City Mall Bacolod, in partnership with Bacolaodiat, Inc., is now accepting applicants for the City Mall Photo Contest.

The contest is open to all professional and amateur photographers.

Entries for the contest must be taken and highlight the celebration of the Bacolaodiat Festival 2017 (January 27 to 29). Every photographer is entitled to a maximum of three (3) entries each.

One of the three entries must have a City Mall moment—the photo must be taken inside the City Mall which depicts “everyday” moment at City Mall, your everyday mall.

An inmate at Silay City Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) was shot and wounded by one of the jail guards when he tried to escape Tuesday evening.

The suspect was identified as Abner Borce, 53, resident of Barangay Balaring, Silay City. He is facing rape charge in court.

He sustained gunshot wound on his right foot and was rushed to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital and was operated Tuesday night.

After the survey instructed by Bacolod Councilor Bart Orola, chairman of the SP Committee on Markets and Slaughter house, 75 families occupying the compound of the old slaughterhouse in Brgy 35 have been notified Tuesday by the Bacolod City Legal Office to vacate the area.

According to Rex Juplo, head of Task Force Botagoy, the occupants were given only seven days to do so.

The informal settlers of the area will be given assistance by the city, according to Orola.
