Amidst the devastating economic effect on the sugar industry, brought about by the rampant and unabated importation of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) particularly by softdrinks companies, it had driven down sugar prices from a high of more than P1,800 per 50-kilo bag at the start of the milling season last September 2016 to less than P1,500 per bag in the last week of December 2016 and is anticipated to get as low as P1,200 per bag if nothing is done to stop the importation of HFCS. The importation of HFCS by the industrial users had increased rapidly from 96,485.30 metric tons in 2011 to 234,863.00 metric tons in September 2016. It was reported that the entry of HFCS will cause the Philippine sugar industry to lose P25 billion in crop year 2016-2017.
