The lead convenor of a labor-based group opposing the unabated entry of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) has warned against “unwarranted interventions of the beverage and softdrink companies.”

Wennie Sancho of the Save-Sugar Industry Movement (Save-SIM) made the statement, as the Sugar Board will deliberate on the issue during their meeting in Ormoc City on February 17.

Sancho said the group currently has “guarded optimism” on the result of the deliberation.

The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) in the Negros Island Region (NIR) welcomes the latest report that they are now anymore involved in anti-illegal drug operations.

Lawyer Renato Garbo, NBI-NIR regional director said that it is an additional obligation on their personnel and resources in helping the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) in the latter’s anti-illegal drug operation.

Last week, Garbo said that last week he has met with the local PDEA office to coordinate their anti-illegal drug operations.

Tanduay Ice notched its 1st win beating Colt 45, 59-56, while ESJ & Sons-Asahi dominated an undermanned Brew Kettle, 86-54 Friday in Class B action of the Fil-Sino Asia Brewery 1st Invitational Cup at BTTHS Covered court.

Colt 45 took the first quarter, 22-19 but Tanduay grab the lead at half-time, 37-29.

A half-sister stabbed dead his half-brother over a misunderstanding in Purok Gumamela, Barangay Binubuhan, Bago City at 2:00 P.M. Sunday.

Police Officer 3 Arturo Margallo, Jr., homicide investigator of Bago City identified the victim as Randy Velez Araneta, 46, single, resident of the place.

He sustained multiple stab wounds in the neck, chest, stomach and left armpit and was declared dead on arrival at Bago City Hospital.

The suspect was identified as Ramona Araneta Tacunday, 31, also resident of the place.

Bacolod Lone District Rep. Greg Gasataya was scheduled to deliver a privilege speech yesterday in Congress against the unregulated entry of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) into the country.

“This will mean potential problem for the country’s sugar industry,” Gasataya said.

He said that he with other congressmen from Negros who will file a resolution asking Congress to investigate in aid of legislation the importation, sale and use of HFCS and its impact to the economy.

The Philippine Army in Negros Occidental are back on high alert status after President Rodrigo Duterte lifted the government’s unilateral ceasefire with the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) Friday.

Brigadier General Francisco Delfin commander of the 303rd Infantry Brigade said they received order from higher command to return to combat operations, while they are still awaiting for the implementing guidelines from the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
