The joint community outreach medical mission of the Betty Bantug Benitez Foundation (BBBF), the Leisure and Resorts World Corporation (LRWC), and the District Office of Congressman Alfredo Benitez of the Third District continues this February in the municipality of Murcia. Another volunteer group has joined the program – the St. John’s Institute (SJI) Alumni Batch 1992. Two hundred twenty seven (227) residents of Haciendas Carmen and Oliva in Barangay Blumentritt, Murcia were beneficiaries of the free medical and dental clinic conducted last February 12, 2017 in Hacienda Carmen. Program activities included distribution of free medicines, and feeding, games and story-telling provided for the children.*

A sugarcane worker hacked his own father after he caught him having sex with his wife when he went home around 3:30 p.m. during Valentine’s Day on February 14.

The incident happened at their house in Hacienda Barbara, Barangay Burgos, Cadiz City.

Superintendent Edel Jose Manzano, Cadiz City PNP chief identified the victim as Rodelito Balderas Bitar, 55, who sustained multiple hack wounds from a cane cutter, in different parts of his body. He was brought to Cadiz District Hospital where he was in critical condition.

As of this date, there is no franchiser yet for Small Town Lottery (STL) operation here, according to Mayor Evelio Leonardia at the presscon yesterday. “If ever some apply, then Bacolod will go for it because STL is legal. And anything not legal will not be allowed. More so that the police is intensifying its campaign against illegal gambling. If ever illegal gambling here is found out to be a problem, then Col. Mark Wanky will take charge of it,” says Mayor Leonardia.

Thus the substance of PD 1727 which declares “malicious dissemination of false information or the willful making of any threat concerning bombs, explosives or any similar device or means of destruction and imposing penalties therefor.”

The Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army (CPP-NPA) is threatening all the police stations in the Negros Island Region (NIR), according to Senior Insp. Armilyn Vargas, spokesperson of the Police Regional Office-18 (PRO-18).

Vargas said police regional director, Chief Superintendent Renato Gumban already instructed all the police chiefs in NIR to be on alert.

National Arts Month this February in Bacolod City will be marked by Kuris Theatre Festival among other culture and art activities in the city.

Kuris Theatre Festival is organized here by The Performance Laboratory and Teatrokon: West Visayas Theater Network in collaboration with the International Theater Institute–International Playwright’s Forum, and Women Playwrights International-Philippines and through the support of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and University of St. La Salle which will be launched on February 20 at the SM City Bacolod Main Atrium.

The Panaad sa Negros Festival Executive Committee has announced that the reservation for the kiosks rental for the upcoming 24th Panaad sa Negros Festival will start on March 15, 2017.

The festival will be held on April 22–30, 2017 at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Brgy. Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

A total of 90 kiosks will be made available for rental, and a maximum of three kiosks per renter will be allowed.

Rental for Food and Drinks is P5,000; for the Garden Show is P3,000; while for the Extension Kiosks is P3,000.

St. John’s Institute (SJI) defeated Bacolod Tay Tung High School (BTTHS), 54-19, in the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports, Cultural and Educational Association (NOPSSCEA) 10 & under basketball tournament played at STI-WNU gym Sunday.

Burj Gabriel Lapuos sizzled for 25 points for STI Baby Falcons after bouncing back from a year break and gunning for nine division title before losing to University of St. La Salle last year.

STI Baby Falcons took the first quarter, 10-6 and led at half time, 19-7.

They extended it, 35-11 in the third quarter.

Sherwin Jardeleza claimed the January title in the recently-concluded Tenpin Masters Challenge (TMC) Season Three championship shootout at East Bowling Center, Lopue’s East Centre in Bacolod City.

Second seed Jardeleza denied 4th seed Paul Pacis in the final game, 244-179. He bowled an average score of 202 pin falls.

On the other hand, top seed Jasper Quimanhan controlled the match against 3rd seed Engr Ariel Yelo to finish 2nd runner-up. The score was 200-180.

A person was shot dead inside the dance hall in Barangay 5, Moises Padilla, Negros Occ., near the town’s public market around 10:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 14.

Police Senior Inspector Allan Reloj, Moises Padilla PNP chief identified the victim as Mar John Grantos Tortosa, 36, married, resident of Barangay Inolingan also of the town. He sustained gunshot wound in the head and died on the spot, according to Reloj.

The suspect was identified as Jade Andales Escover, 36, single, also of the place.

A resident of San Carlos City in Negros Occidental was shot dead by two unidentified suspects riding in motorcycle in Ylagan Poblacion in Vallerhermoso, Negros Oriental Tuesday noon.

Police identified the victim as Edgardo Parcon, of legal age, of Barangay 6, San Carlos City. He sustained two fatal gunshot wounds at the back of the body and was declared dead–on-arrival at Vallehermoso Rural Health Center.

Police operatives who responded to the crime scene recovered two empty shells of .45 caliber firearm.

An uncle slashed the neck of his nephew in Sitio Binuslay, Barangay Manlocahoc, Sipalay City around 9:00 p.m. Tuesday due to drunkenness.

Police Chief Inspector Romeo Vargas, Sipalay City PNP chief identified the victim as Jameson Rafols Butalid, 39, of the said place.

His neck was nearly cut-off and died on the spot.

Police identified the suspect as Jerry Carael Rafols, 39, married, resident of the place.
