President Rodrigo Duterte recently appointed Monico “Nicky” Puentevella, Jr. as one of the Board of Directors of the John Hay Management Corporation (JHMC).

“Pursuant to the provisions of existing laws, you are hereby appointed Member, Board of Directors, John Hay Management Corporation,” the President said in his letter dated February 8, 2017.

Faced with threats from cheaper imported substitutes like the high fructose corn syrup, local sugar producers “should strive to get ahead,” Senator Cynthia Villar said here Sunday.

Speaking during the Farmers’ Day in Bago City, Negros Occidental, Villar said local producers should be competitive to overcome threats to the sugar industry.

I will “support anything that will help the sugar industry,” she said, adding that local producers must stand up to the competition.

Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr., yesterday shot back at critics of the proposed Japanese-backed ship recycling project in Hinobaan town, some five hours away from this capital city of Bacolod.

With an increasing population and the need for the “effective delivery of basic services and equal representation for the people of Bacolod”, Lone District Rep. Greg Gasataya pushed anew for the creation of another legislative district in this capital city.

Gasataya filed said House Bill No. 147 which seeks to reapportion Bacolod City into two legislative districts.

He has sought the views of Bacolod City officials on the matter.

The University celebrates with the country the National Arts Month. In line with the celebration, the College of Arts and Sciences and the Office of External Affairs have chosen February 15 to be the launching day of the celebration with the theme, “Tali-ambong: Kita Pagabag-ohon.” (Arts: it will change us). The art exhibit of various artists of Negros will run from Feb. 15 to 28 from 8:30 to 5:30 pm at the Museo Rekoletos de Negros (UNO-R campus) and admission is free. The featured artists are: visual arts: Bert Berondo; Larry Guillema; Revo Yanson; Christian and Dr. Annabee Claur; Carlos Berondo; Joan Honoridez; Pablita Nava; Ana Mae Torres-Lacson; Ma. Lourdes “Melod” Chua; for mixed media: Fr. Abraham Latoza, OAR ; Carlos Eduardo I. Legaspi, Jr.; Zard Saballa; and Fray Sarita. During the opening program at the President’s Hall. Messages about arts were shared by Fr. Louie Gabinete, OAR, Dr. Carlos Eduardo Legaspi, Jr. and Mr. Bert Berondo. Legaspi and Berondo shared about art as an expression of the social milieu of the times while Fr. Gabinete shared that art is the one that expresses our relationship with others and with God. The celebration is in memory of one of the patron of local arts – Rev. Fr. Loreto Dacanay, OAR.

Ninety-five Indigenous Peoples (IPs) who are elementary and secondary students belonging to the Ati and Ata tribal communities from different towns and cities of the province received educational assistance from the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental through its scholarship bridging program dubbed “Educational Assistance for Indigenous Peoples Basic Education”.

Central Negros Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CENECO) Bago Field Office conducted two Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities for the month of February; a Sitio Electrification Project (SEP) and a turn-over of medical supplies on February 9 and 16, respectively.

A total of 34 beneficiaries from Purok Site and Malinong, Brgy. Bagroy attended the energization ceremony led by Director Robert Javellana, CENECO District 6–Bago City representative and Ms. Cherish Mae Millevo, Area Manager.

Christian Pelione won the Under 12 title with a score of 4.5/5 points in standard play during the 2-day 7th Barangay Bata Chess Tournament 2017 at the Our Lady of Lourdes Parish Gym in Bata, Bacolod City.

U12 champion Pelione outpointed 2nd placer Irimar Ortega (4.0/5 pts, 14.5 BH) and 3rd placer Jhunrell Ferrer (4.0/5 pts, 14.0 BH) for the age-group title.

A man was found by his relatives half-buried around 9:40 Sunday morning inside the backyard of his neighbor in Andrea Village, Barangay Zone 2, Cadiz City.

Police Superintendent Edel Jose Manzano, Cadiz City PNP chief identified the victim as Alexander Enriquez, 57, married, also resident of the place.

He failed to come home Saturday evening while having a drinking session in the rented house of suspects Leonard Jimenea Benitez, of legal age, ”Alias Oting” and his son, a certain “Cokic”.

The driver of a single motorcycle was killed and his companion was injured and also the driver of tricycle, his wife and minor child after they collided along the highway of Barangay Don Salvador Benedicto (Carmen) in Pontevedra, Negros Occidental Saturday.

The victim was identified as Sandy Bricker, 32, of Barangay Guinpanaan, Moises Padilla town. He was declared dead on arrival at Valladolid District Hospital due to fatal head and body injuries.

An older brother was stabbed dead by his two younger brothers in Sitio Lamac, Barangay Buluangan, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental on Saturday.

Police Superintendent Arturo Fullero, San Carlos City PNP OIC police chief identified the victim as Bonifacio Canhagas, of legal age, resident of the place. He sustained fatal multiple stab wounds in the body.

The suspects were identified as his younger brothers Graciano and Basilio Canhagas, both of legal age. They escaped after the stabbing and remain at-large as of press time.

C’85 managed to keep the #1 spot despite recording a low output team triple of 1,397 pin falls. They gathered a three-game score of 440-473-484.
