The Senate Committee on Agriculture and Trade Industry agreed to create a Sugar Industry Consultative Committee yesterday even as sugar industry stakeholders’ doubts linger.

Senator Cynthia Villar said she is pushing for a settlement.

“The industry wants a P1,500 price for domestic sugar and the beverage companies will help,” Villar, chair of the agriculture committee, said.

The companies agreed to recognize Sugar Order No. 3, she said.

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri said it will be a new dawn for the sugar industry as everything ends well.

Senator Cynthia Villar told sugar industry stakeholders to utilize the P2 billion fund under the Sugar Industry Development Act (SIDA) “to be competitive”

Villar, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture yesterday presided the Senate hearing on the importation of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS).

Villar pointed out that there is P300 million fund for Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries.

Barely a week after more than six thousand sugar farmers and farm workers staged a protest rally against the importation and use of HFCS in front of the Coca-Cola bottling plant in Mansilingan, Bacolod City, Agriculture Secretary Manny Piñol announced on March 31 that an agreement was reached among stakeholders on the HFCS issue.Manny said that the agreement was reached after a meeting attended by the SRA head, Board of Investments Governor, a miller representative, a sugar farmer, officials of Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola and two of Manny's undersecretaries.

We, the various labor leaders and advocates representing the workers in the sugar industry of Negros Island, would like to express our deep concern on the crisis confronting the sugar industry. We are requesting the Senate to immediately resolve the controversial importation of High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) used by the beverage and softdrink companies as artificial sweeteners and a substitute for our domestic sugar.

A security guard died in a road crash along Airport Road in Hda. Panaogao 2, Brgy. 4, Silay City past 7 p.m. Monday.

Police Superintendent Willy Diel, Silay City PNP chief identified the victim as Jaime Dio, 48, native of Hacienda Village, Murcia town.

Police investigation by SPO4 Rodrigo Asparo revealed that the victim was crushed to death after his motorcycle slid and went underneath the cargo truck he tried to overtake. The victim, presumed to report for work, was driving his Kawasaki motorcycle heading north following the cargo truck.

A construction worker did not make it alive to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital at dawn yesterday after he was discovered dead atop the backhoe of a construction firm where he was employed in Barangay Sum-ag, Bacolod City.

Ricardo Taladtad, Jr., 30, native of Barangay 5, Isabela town, Negros Occidental was discovered dead by his live-in partner, Jessa De La Torre at dawn yesterday after her return to Barangay Sum-ag.

A minor was arrested after handing a suspected shabu in exchange of P200 marked money to a poseur-buyer in Purok Kagaykay, Barangay 2, Bacolod City around 10:30 p.m. Monday.

Police Chief Inspector Benedicto Villarias, Police Station 2 chief identified the suspect as White Enumerable Laguito, 15 years old, resident of the place.

Confiscated from him were two elongated and one big heat-sealed suspected shabu and other drug paraphernalia, and P380 cash believed proceeds of selling the prohibited drugs.
