The Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) is investigating another alleged extortion against a businessman in the city, this time allegedly by the New People’s Army (NPA) .

According to Supt. Noel Polines, BCPO spokesperson, another businessman reported that he received a phone call from an unidentified Tagalong-speaking man demanding for P35,000 in cash.

The man introduced himself as a member of the NPA.

The House Committee on Agriculture and Food chaired by Anac-IP partylist Representative Jose Panganiban Jr. has set an investigation into the unabated importation of high fructose corn fructose (HFCS) and its impact on the sugar industry on May 16, 1 p.m., at the House of Representatives in Quezon City, Bacolod City Lone District Representative Greg Gasataya said.

Gasataya has earlier filed a resolution seeking an inquiry after delivering a privilege speech last February about the effects of HFCS on the sugar industry.

Pro-environment groups in Negros expressed sadness and frustration over yesterday’s Commission on Appointment’s (CA) rejecting the ad interim appointment of Environment Secretary Gina Lopez after three confirmation hearings.

Randy James Rojo, coordinator of Green Alert Negros said, “it is a sad day for us.”

“We see her as hope for our environment to recover and a change of paradigm of protection and sustainable development as opposed to the paradigm of destruction,” Rojo said.

The provincial government of Negros Occidental is reviewing the contracts of security agencies securing Capitol’s various facilities, said acting provincial administrator Lucille Gelvolea yesterday.

The review comes on the heels of an ongoing investigation of the Provincial Legal Office on an erring security guard of IloBac Security Agency detailed at the Negros First Food Terminal.

A woman yielded suspected shabu in a raid in her house at Sitio Buli, Barangay Manguto in Pamplona town, Negros Oriental Monday evening.

Police Inspector Lenbert Yango, Pamplona PNP chief identified the suspect as Narcisa De La Rosa, legal age, resident of the place.

Judge Leah Villaria of Municipal Trial Court in Pamplona town issued the search warrant. Eight plastic sachets of suspected shabu were confiscated from her possession. She is now detained and charged with violation of RA 9165.*(CM G)

A 22-year-old man committed suicide by hanging at their house in Purok Sambag, Barangay 6, Kabankalan City.

The body of Jay Odon Dagunan, single, was found by his aunt, Lyca Odon, 30, hanging at the beam of their house inside his room with the rope tied around his neck.

The family members did not hear any sound inside the room and believe he had committed suicide on Monday evening. His body was found around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The family told police investigators that the victim had personal and family problems but did not elaborate to police.*

Two brothers were arrested in drug buy bust in Purok Freedom, Barangay Fabrica, Sagay City around 10:00 a.m. Tuesday.

Police Chief Inspector Nasser Canja, OIC police chief identified the suspects as Jerson Astorga De La Torre, 32, single, “Alias Papot” and Laneger Astorga De La Torre, 38, married, both residents of the place.
