A Bacolod City-based anti-corruption and crime group is calling on Health Secretary Paulyn Jean Rosell-Ubial and House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez to investigate alleged health insurance frauds allegedly involving some “eye surgeons”.

With composite prices of sugar still down at P1,200-P1,250, sugar planters and the labor sector are “very much worried as to what the industry will face in the coming crop year.”

Lawyer Emilio Yulo, spokesperson of the Sugar Alliance of the Philippines (SAP) in a statement said, “we are appealing for a sustained campaign against beverage companies using high fructose corn syrup.”

Bacolod City is being used by drug syndicates as a transhipment point for their operations, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) regional director for Negros Island Region, Atty. Roselyn Borja, said.

Borja cited the island’s road networks and ports.

She said there is a need to strengthen the barangay drug clearing operations as mandated by the Dangerous Drugs Board (DDB).

It mandates that the Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Council (BADAC) create barangay anti-drug auxiliary teams where one team is created for every 2,000 population of the barangay.

The Recruitment Team of the Philippine Army will conduct Pre-Entry Examinations (AFPSAT) to qualified applicants for Officer Preparatory Course, Officer Candidate Course (OCC) and Candidate Soldier Course (CSC).

According to LTC Ericson Rosana, Chief, 3rd Division Public Affairs Office (DPAO), the examinations are set on May 6-7, 2017 at the Iloilo Science of Arts and Technology University, Lapaz, Iloilo City; and on May 9, 2017 at the Negros Occidental High School in Bacolod City.

Three drug suspects were arrested in separate police operations in Dumaguete City in Negros Oriental Wednesday evening.

Police operatives identified the suspect as Allan Panaligan, 19, of Zone 3, Barangay Looc, Dumaguete City; Ronnie Gregory of Barangay Tinago, Dumaguete City and Sheila Mae Sanon, also of Barangay Looc, Dumaguete City.

A resident of Purok Hacienda Golez, Barangay Rizal, Sagay City was arrested in a drug bust in the national highway of Purok Masagana, Barangay Poblacion 2 in the city around 12:37 p.m. Wednesday.

Senior Inspector Ellendie Rebusquillo, Sagay City PNP deputy chief identified the suspect as Bobby Quimbo Galan, 43, and confiscated with three small and three big heat-sealed suspected shabu and other drug paraphernalia.

Police operatives also recovered the P100 buy bust money; P980 cash proceeds and one cellular phone.

Two wanted persons were arrested for attempted murder in Murcia and Silay City, Tuesday.

In Murcia, the suspect was arrested in Poblacion in the town Tuesday morning.

Murcia PNP’s Sr. Insp. Ronald Santillan named him as Rodelio De La Cruz Alimania, Jr., 26, “Alias Junior”, married, of Sitio Anangue in Brgy. Buenavista, of the town.

The suspect was arrested after eight years in hiding.

Judge George Patriarca of the Regional Trial Court, Branch-46 in Bacolod City issued his arrested warrant for the crime of attempted murder dated July 8, 2009.

Deserving bowlers were recognized during the culmination activity of the 2017 Summer Tenpin Bowling Clinic at Lopue’s East Bowling Center, Villamonte in Bacolod City on April 30.

The bowling clinic which was hosted by Sugarbowl Tenpin Association Inc. (STAI) gathered 38 first and second timer participants aged 10 to 58 years old.

Bowling instructor Herman Santos of STAI announced on Monday that they will be organizing another Summer Tenpin Bowling Clinic on May 22, 24, and 28.

After its last match win, Ceres Negros Football Club advanced to the ASEAN Zonal semi-final round against Johor Darul Ta’zim of Malaysia.

The Busmen will challenge Malaysian squad in an away match on May 17 at the Tan Sri Dato Haji Hassan Yunos Stadium in Johor Bahru.

They will play in their home match at Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City on May 31.

In securing its semi-finals entry, Ceres Negros FC edged over Tampines Rovers last May 3 at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore which put them on top of Group G. Final score was 4-2.

The sugar industry blames Coca-Cola's importation and use of HFCS as the primary cause of the drop in domestic sugar prices this crop year. From a high of P1,800 per 50-kilo bag when the current milling campaign set off last September 2016, the millgate price of domestic sugar has plummeted to slightly over P1,300 per bag as of April 28.

Coca-Cola disputes the assertion, pointing its fingers at the oversupply in the domestic market due to the 2016 importation as the cause of the drop in sugar prices. The company contended that approximately 250,000 metric tons of sugar were allowed to be imported by SRA in 2016.
