 On a ship worked a seaman who is so industrious and meticulous in his duties that he has not incurred any demerit nor committed any misdemeanor in his more than 10 years of seafaring career. He is also has no taste for any alcoholic beverage, making him the butt of jokes of his shipmates.

During the crew's Christmas party, the captain persuaded the seaman to have a sip of the spirits. The seaman reluctantly obeyed, fearful of the captain's ire if his request is rejected.

With an objective to nurture chess talents in its barangay, the two-category 2017 Mansilingan Charter Day Chess Tournament will unfold at MANCHESS Club in Mansilingan, Bacolod City on May 27 and 28.

The 2-day chess event feature 12 & Under Category on the first day and Open Category on the second day.

Prizes at stake in the age group include: Php2,500 - Champion; Php2,000 - 2nd Place; Php1,500 - 3rd Place; Php500 - 4th Place; and 5th-10th - Php250 each. Special award will be given for the Top 8 Under male and female players.

The two-day 4th Ceres Cup 2017 gathered 465 teams nationwide breaking its own record of 420 squads last year.

This football event will be played at two venues in Talisay City - North Field, Carlos Hilado Memorial State College Football Field and Sta. Maria Football Field.

Started with 306 teams in 2014, Ceres Cup has grown tremendously through the years – expecting more than 10,000 players, coaches and parents coming over for the weekend’s tournament.

Bacolod City Councilor Ricardo Tan assures that he will support the pastors and community leaders in their peace and development programs. His message was read by Bishop Mike Garcia during the Negros Pastors and Leaders Fellowship for Peace and Development held yesterday, May 18 at Natures Village.

He said, it has been his dream to have peace and development. “We need peace so that we will have better understanding, and we need development for brighter future of our children,” he said.

As part of air transportation boom in the province of Negros Occidental, the Philippine Airlines (PAL) is set to open a direct flight between Silay-Bacolod International Airport and Clark, Pampanga. The maiden flight is on June 22, 2017, according to Dr. Marlyn Sanogal, head of the provincial planning and development office, in her presentation during the Pastors and Community Leaders Assembly for Peace and Development yesterday at Nature’s Village.

A drug pusher was arrested at 12:50 a.m. Wednesday in Purok Proper, Barangay Mabini, Valladolid town, Negros Occidental.

Senior Inspector Junjie Liba, Valladolid PNP chief identified the suspect as Jan Nero Guerra Cuevas, alias “Ron-Ron”, 26, resident of the place.

Police authorities confiscated from him two small heat sealed suspected shabu in exchange of P200 marked money.

Cash proceeds of P235 were also recovered from his possession including the buy bust money.

He is now detained at Valladolid PNP lock up cell.*(CMG)

The driver of a motorcycle died and his backrider injured when they collided with a private vehicle in the national highway of Barangay Caliban, Murcia town around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Police Senior Inspector Ryan Santillan identified the victim as Jan Rey Manzo Canillan, 19, single, resident of Purok Indian Mango, Barangay Lopez Jaena, Murcia town, in Negros Occ.. He sustained head and body injuries and was rushed to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.

A teenager was shot dead near his house in Sitio Mambanao, Barangay Kumaliskis, Murcia town, Negros Occ. around 5:05 a.m. Wednesday.

Senior Inspector Joevito Bose, Don Salvador Benedicto PNP chief identified the victim as Melvin Morden, 18 years old, resident of the place.

He sustained multiple gunshot wounds with the fatal one on his head. He died on the spot.

Bose said he may have been shot using a .45 caliber firearm.

Three more persons were arrested in a firearms deal at the parking lot of New Government Center in Circumferential Road, Barangay Villamonte, Bacolod City around 12:05 a.m., May 18, 2017.

Arrested were Raffy Magbanua, of legal age, resident of Sitio Kanapod, Barangay Manlocahoc, Sipalay City; Joseph Comahig, of legal age, of Purok Kakahuyan, Barangay Cartagena, Sipalay City; and Ian Ceralgo, of legal age, of Barangay 5, Sipalay City.

The number 1 most wanted man in Talisay City, Negros Occidental was arrested by Regional Public Safety Battalion-18 inside the compound of Colegio Sta. Ana de Victorias Wednesday afternoon.

Senior Superintendent Thomas Joseph Martir, Battalion commander of RSPB-18 identified the suspect as Glenn Billote Higantana, 45, of Barangay Dos Hermanas, Talisay City. He was able to elude arrest for two years after he transferred residence at Villa Elena in Manapla town, a housing relocation site.

The body of an unidentified male was found inside a sack in Sitio Himampangon, Barangay Balaas, Manjuyod town in Negros Oriental around 6:00 p.m. Wednesday.

Manjuyod PNP said that they were informed by Bindoy PNP that an unidentified fisherman from Manjuyod claimed that he saw the victim pass by in the area.

Among the items taken up during initial “transparency meeting” last May 18, 2017 is the downward movement of Central Negros Electric Cooperative, Inc. (CENECO) electricity rate from P10.8556/kWh for April 2017 to P10.5062/Kwh for May 2017 or rounded off equivalent of P0.35/kWh.

Spotted Armed Group Not Abu Sayyaf

Major Gen. Jon Aying, commander of the 3rd Infantry Division of the Philippine Army confirmed reports that the 10 to 20 armed men and women spotted landing in Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental are not members of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), but rather members of the New People’s Army (NPA).

In an interview with ABS-CBN-Bacolod, Aying said the armed group likely came from the town of Santa Catalina in the said province, and have chosen to travel by sea in pumpboats in order to bypass army checkpoints and patrols in the province.
