Fun and Frolic for the Young and not so-Young

Eight couples, two singles and 13 children of the Toga family led by NDB Editor in Chief Pert Toga happily spent Christmas Day at the cool and windy atmosphere of the Bantug Lake and Ranch at Brgy. Alangilan in Bacolod City. The place is surrounded by natural habitat teeming with birds from the wild, fishes in the lake and some domesticated species imported from nearby countries which provided picnickers and the usual weekenders with a pleasant backgrounders which made their stay exceedingly memorable and truly an appropriate setting for a Christmas celebration.

National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) announces the awarding of the first ever Researcher’s Prize instituted by NCCA this year to Ma. Cecilia Locsin-Nava for her proposed biography and collection of the works of the late Joel Roque Arbolario. An experienced writer, researcher, and translator, Locsin-Nava has just received her third National Book Award from the Manila Critics Circle and the National Book Development Board for her translation of Ramon Muzones’ Shri-Bishaya in ceremonies at the National Museum of Fine Arts on December 2, 2017.

Unidentified suspect shot dead a Village Chief in Barangay Poblacion in Sta. Catalina, Negros Oriental around 7:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Police identified the victim as Leonardo Margasenio, of legal age, married, of Barangay Nagbinlod, Sta. Catalina town.

Margasenio was attending an ABC Night held at Rizal Park in Barangay Poblacion, Sta. Catalina, when he was shot by a suspect hitting his chest that caused his instantaneous death.

The victim was brought to Bayawan District Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival by the attending physician.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is urging the public to avoid using firecrackers this New Year to avoid injuries.

Instead, Bacolod Fire Marshall Supt. Rodolfo Denaga suggests the use of alternative instruments that can make noise but are safe.

If ever one wishes to use firecrackers, he should buy from a legitimate source to ensure the quality of the product.

In the city, sellers are located near the Pope John Paul Tower where the combined team from the BFP, DTI , PNP and others are keeping a close watch to ensure the safety of buyers and sellers.

Police Regional Office (PRO) 6 Regional Director Pol. Chief Supt. Cesar Hawthorne Binag said, they aim zero incidents of stray bullets, indiscriminate firing this year-end.

Hence, PRO6 would like to solicit the cooperation and support of the general public “as we strive to have a zero related incident in our campaign against indiscriminate firing or illegal discharge of firearm.”

A total of 19 firecracker-related injuries, with one amputation involving a teenage boy in Sipalay City, were reported by the Department of Health’s (DOH) Epidemiology Bureau yesterday.

This brought to 61 the total number of injuries recorded since Dec. 21, the bureau said in its Aksyon: Paputok Injury Reduction 2017 Report 7.

“This is 98 (62 percent) cases lower than the five-year (2012-2016) average and 47 (44 percent) cases lower than the same time period last year,” read the report.

For the New Year’s Eve revelry, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has urged the public to use only allowed firecrackers and shun banned ones, or else face being fined or jailed.

DILG Officer-in-Charge Catalino S. Cuy said the government is serious in regulating firecrackers and would deal with those who do not abide by the law and regulations.
