Toboso-hailed and reigning Asian Boxing Federation lightweight champion Merlito ‘Tiger’ Sabillo (27, 13KOs-4-1) is on tough training ahead of the Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) light flyweight title fight on February 17 against defending champion Edward Heno (11, 5KOs-0-5).

Sabillo said that he won’t take Heno lightly. “I take my training seriously. I won’t rely on the hometown advantage because my opponent [Heno] is undefeated. But, I will do my very best to deliver a good fight,” said the former WBO world minimumweight champion.

After several game suspensions due to the absence of playing venue, AA Electrical-Orange and Akasya finally secured initial semi-finals berth after beating their respective opponents in the ongoing D-League Basketball Tournament at the STI-WNU gym.

Janjan Bejemino fired 7 points in the opening quarter to anchor AA Electrical in a 15-11 lead as George delos Reyes added 4 points while Parker Deles powered BAPRO with 5 points.

Santa Clarita International High School (SCIHS) Primes survived over Bacolod Tay Tung High School (BTTHS) Thunderbolts, 94-90 to capture the Dinagyang Mayor’s Cup Battle of the Champions title yesterday at the Ledesco Gym of Hua Siong College of Iloilo.

Primes dominated Thunderbolts from start to finish behind Ralph Bajon, Marvin Cuerbo and Franc Steven Tono.

Bajon was named as the Finals MVP and part of the mythical team alongside teammate Cuerbo, Thunderbolts’ Harold Alarcon, Mark Nonoy of Hua Siong College of lloilo and Andre Chua of Sacred Heart-Ateneo de Cebu.

Kanlaon Volcano in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental is showing signs of abnormality based on the report of Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council and LRDRMO of Canlaon City recently.

In the Kanlaon volcanic bulletin around 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, Kanlaon Volcano’s seismic monitoring network recorded two (2) volcanic quakes during the past 24 hours.

Moderate emission of white steam-laden plumes that rose to 300 meters from the summit before drifting northwest was observed during times when the crater was visible.

A member of “Aki Cuadra Group” was arrested after being served with warrant of arrest for drugs recently.

He is identified as Johnnie Villarete, who reportedly formed his own robbery group after leaving the Ronald Aki Cuadra group, responsible for series of holdup and robberies in Bacolod and nearby cities. He was arrested for violation of Section 11 of Article II of RA 9165.

An motorcycle driver who was to pass through the checkpoint of Kabankalan City PNP escaped after throwing his firearm in a canal.

The unidentified suspect then made a u-turn and sped off in the National Highway at Barangay 9 in the city around 7:45 a.m. Monday.

Following the motorcycle was Village Chief Jerry Vargas of Barangay Pandanon, Mabinay town in Negros Oriental, who alighted from his multicab and took the .9mm caliber ARMSCOR firearm (without serial number) with one magazine loaded with 6 live bullets.

Police Senior Superintendent Rodolfo Castil, Jr., Negros Occidental Police Provincial Police Office (NOCPPO), Director lauded the Himamaylan City PNP for its intensified campaign against loose firearms in his locality.

The Himamaylan PNP under Police Chief Inspector Antonio Benitez, Jr. has collected several firearms, ammunitions and explosives during their house-to-house campaign in implementing “Oplan Katok, Oplan Boga”.
