Mayor, Solon Greet NDB on its 50th Yr.

Two of Bacolod’s top political figures led local officialdom in greeting the staff and management of NEGROS DAILY BULLETIN during the official launching rites of its 50th (Golden) Anniversary last Saturday at the Negros Press Club (NPC) Building.

Bacolod City Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia and Congressman Monico O. Puentevella, perceived to be at odds over who should prevail in the May 10 polls as city executive of Bacolod, however, were not destined to cross each other’s path as they just came in less than an hour apart.

Both were scheduled to officiate at the symbolic release of two white doves symbolizing peace, purity, love, freedom and fellowship, in line with the NDB Golden Year Theme: "Renewal of Commitment for Service, Freedom & Democracy."

First to arrive at the launching venue was the mayor who came in at around 2:45 p.m., 15 minutes before the 3:00 p.m. program was to start. He left a few minutes later for some other important appointment, a funeral for someone very close to him.

But before leaving the NPC building, he saw to it that he extended his warm greetings to the 50-year-old paper’s Editor Arman Toga and the Editor-in-Chief, Pert Toga through his cellphone.

The Bacolod congressman on the other hand, came in at half past 3:00 p.m. and stayed until after the doves were released, but had to leave ahead even before the anniversary snacks were served.

The two "warring" political giants, if they did not miss each other that afternoon, were slated to give inspirational speeches, being both also past presidents of the Negros Press Club.

On hand to fill in the gap was City Councilor Wilson "Jun" Gamboa, Jr. who had obliged to give his remarks and congratulatory message on the historic and significant occasion.

The outgoing and incoming presidents of the NPC, Edgar Cadagat and Julius Mariveles, took turns in addressing the NDB staff, their family and guests, while Master Musician Joel "Bagguer" Villaluz, assisted by his wife Cosette, provided the background music which enlivened the atmosphere that afternoon.

A year-round activity, namely, a musical concert in different cities and leading towns of Negros Occidental featuring famed entertainers from here and Manila will soon be tapped to provide quality entertainment through the efforts of Bagguer Villaluz.

This will be designed to raise funds for worthy undertakings and humanitarian objectives to benefit the most needy in our midst.*
