Jose Mari Chan: Adopted, Honorary Mayor of Bacolod on Chinese New Year

One of the highlights of the 13th Bacolaodiat Festival on February 15-18, is the adoption of the famous veteran singer, Jose Mari Chan as adopted son of Bacolod, by virtue of SP Resolution authored by Councilor Caesar Distrito as requested by the Bacolaodiat Inc. through Jennifer Gochangco-Ongpin, chair of Bacolaodiat Inc. in cooperation with the Tsinoy community of Bacolod City, at the same time honorary mayor during the Chinese New Year celebration as per Executive Order No. 6 signed by Mayor Evelio Leonardia.

Distrito Resolution states that, the lifestory of Chan has been a perfect example of success as a result of hard work, determination and perseverance despite the many hardships encountered, thus, worthy of emulation by all generations of Filipinos.

It said Chan is in his 51st year as a recording artist, singer, and songwriter, and is unprecedented in the local recording history. He holds the record as the biggest selling recording artist in the history of Philippine pop music, accumulating more than 43 platinum in sales.

His “Constant Change” album was the first ever to be given The Diamond Record Award, while his “Christmas In Our Hearts” has now reached the double Diamond Record status (20 x platinum), the resolution said.

Chan has garnered several Awit and Katha nominations and has been given awards for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Bes Jazz Recording, Best Christmas Song, Best Traditional Pop Song and two Catholic Mass Media Awards, it said.

Also, in 1974, Chan was awarded the TOYM as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Men of the Philippines and has been honored with a Dangal Ng Musikang Pilipino Award by the Philippine Association of the Recording Industry, the Antonio C. Barreiro “Lifetime Achievement Award” by the Metro Pop Foundation, and a Dr. Jose P. Rizal Award for Excellence for 2006 by the Manila Times.

The National Press Club has created a special annual Award for Outstanding Singers and Songwriters and named it after him. In Dec. 2005, in recognition of his outstanding record sales, ABS CBN’s ASAP show gave Chan the first ever Elite Platinum Award.

Chan is chairman and CEO of Binalbagan Sugar Central Company (Biscom) Inc., in southern Negros Occidental, the third largest sugar company in the Philippines, and of the A. Chan group of companies, Distrito cited.*
