    Don Salvador Benedicto

DSB Now the Summer Capital of Negros Occ.

    By Carla N. Cañet

Don Salvador Benedicto, the town founded by 1st District Board Member Nehemias “Nene” dela Cruz is now the official Summer Capital of the province of Negros Occidental after it gained the approval of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan in its regular session yesterday.

Dela Cruz authored the said Ordinance which declared his beloved hometown as the summer capital of the province.

The approval of this bill will pave the way to more tourism developments, being its priority program. Incumbent mayor of DSB is Mayor Marxlen dela Cruz, son of two former mayors Nene de la Cruz and Cynthia de la Cruz.

It has committed to develop infrastructures like banking, trade, commerce, tourist accommodations and a government center for the Provincial Governor and the Sangguniang Panlalawigan.

DSB has proven itself worthy of being declared as the Summer Capital of the province.
The primary purpose of the declaration is the promotion of tourism in the town and the whole province of Negros Occidental in general.

The town is known for its cool and temperate climate all year round, the coldest being 12 oC to 16 oC in December to February and 18 oC to 27oC, which is suitable for family and group activities.

Its main attributes include the existence of flora and fauna which are unique to the place and investors have shown interest thereon.

The town is surrounded by mountainous terrain outlined by a well maintained zigzag highway which provides an abundant view of its gorges, hills, ravines, rivers and waterfalls.

DSB is also an ideal location for tourism development being accessible from all geographical directions and connected by an extensive, well maintained network of national highways to Sagay City in the north, Canlaon City in the south, San Carlos City in the east and Bacolod City to the west. Its close proximity to Bacolod City, seaports of the said city and San Carlos City and Bacolod-Silay airport makes tourism development ideal in the town of DSB.*

NOHS Batch '96 First Reunion Party

Negros Occidental High School (NOHS) batch ’96 successfully held its first reunion at the

Benjamin Hall last December 30, 2009. Fifty three out of the 83 confirmed participants

    attended the event.

During the post reunion party at Siberia Bar, the number of attendees rose to 99 which

exceeded the expectation of the organizing committee. It was fun to see old

classmates relive the good old high school days and reminisce those awkward & funny moments around the campus.

We would like to thank our batchmates who gave their pledge and to the organizing committee which made our first reunion a resounding success.

Here are the new Ad Hoc Committee for the 2010 Reunion: Francis Gayares, Chairperson; Charisse Pahilanga, Co-chairperson; Ana Liza Dilag, Secretary; January Nene-Bolves, Treasurer; and Board of Directors Earl John Buncio, Ean Joy Grijaldo, Junry Alameda, Rhyan "Angel" Ballesteros, Fr. Brethen Rye Gamala, Glenn de la Cruz, Arvin E. Pamatian, MD., and Arneil Joey Armodina.

See you on our next reunion!! (James G. Toga)

  • READY FOR THE CHALLENGE SIKAT

    SIKAT SOLAR CAR

‘SIKAT’ Solar Powered Car on Exhibit at SM City

    By Owen S. Bayog

SIKAT solar car’s emergence was undertaken by a dedicated group of faculty and students from the Mechanical Engineering and the Electronics and Communications Engineering Departments of De La Salle University-Manila, in partnership with the Philippine Solar Car Challenge Society, Inc.

During a visit to Australia where Henry Co, President of Ford Philippines saw how the country could position itself to the World Solar Challenge. The need for the people to be informed about renewable energy was the baseline of giving birth to the Philippine Solar Car Challenge Society, Inc. (SINAG Society) who has gained inspiration in creating another solar powered car named "Sinag."

The birth of these cars SINAG and SIKAT meant that it is viable for the Philippines to tap renewable power sources such as solar. The country it was pointed out, is also producing most efficient cells in the world having sun for 365 days. These cars also mean that with the Filipinos working together for a common goal - we can create our mark in the international arena along with other countries.

The Philippine Solar Car Challenge Society, Inc. is a non-stock, non-profit organization incorporated to promote the beneficial use of renewable energy sources - including, but not limited to, solar power. The Society aims to undertake a viable and continuing program for the study and application of renewable energy sources toward the development of a Philippine program for sustainable utilization of renewable energy.

Today, SIKAT will hit the roads of Bacolod City at 7:30am from SM City to the University of St. La Salle. The 2 day exhibit at SM City Bacolod was a success according to Gener Gabinete of (SIKAT). "This is an advocacy to introduce and let the people know how useful solar energy is, how we can maximize renewable energy to our advantage," Gabinete added.

The solar powered vehicle is on tour and will be on key major Cities the rest of the year. It continues to test itself on Philippine roads to get ready for its competition come 2011 in the World Solar Car Challenge in Austraila.*
