The government nutrition office is giving guidance to family members to ensure clean food is served in every Filipino home.

First, wash hands with soap using clean water to remove dirt especially if members intend to eat with bare hands or ‘kamayan’ way.

“Have separate towels for drying hands; drying plates, spoons and forks; and wiping table tops. Have them washed with soap and water, rinsed and sundried regularly,” FNRI said.

Food should not be allowed to stand in room temperature for a long time. Serve hot foods hot and cold foods cold. Clean food spills at once to avoid accidents.

“When dishing out foods, keep fingers away from rims of glasses and plates and out of food. Do not touch or serve food with your fingers.”

Furthermore, always cover foods to protect them from dust and insects.

Do not blow plastic bag to be used as container for food for hygienic reasons and provide serving spoon for every dish to avoid contamination.

The dining room and kitchen, being the center of cooking activities, must be kept clean and orderly at all times with garbage cans covered.

Also, chemicals, insecticides and detergents must be stored away and separate from food supplies to avoid accidents like poisoning.

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure,” the FNRI said.* (PIA)
