Driver throws firearm to defy checkpoint
An motorcycle driver who was to pass through the checkpoint of Kabankalan City PNP escaped after throwing his firearm in a canal.
The unidentified suspect then made a u-turn and sped off in the National Highway at Barangay 9 in the city around 7:45 a.m. Monday.
Following the motorcycle was Village Chief Jerry Vargas of Barangay Pandanon, Mabinay town in Negros Oriental, who alighted from his multicab and took the .9mm caliber ARMSCOR firearm (without serial number) with one magazine loaded with 6 live bullets.
Vargas then went directly to the team leader, Police Senior Inspector Edgar Tonico to surrender the firearm.
Tonico thanked Vargas for the deed.*
