SCIHS Downs BTTHS to Win Dinagyang Caging Crown

Santa Clarita International High School (SCIHS) Primes survived over Bacolod Tay Tung High School (BTTHS) Thunderbolts, 94-90 to capture the Dinagyang Mayor’s Cup Battle of the Champions title yesterday at the Ledesco Gym of Hua Siong College of Iloilo.

Primes dominated Thunderbolts from start to finish behind Ralph Bajon, Marvin Cuerbo and Franc Steven Tono.

Bajon was named as the Finals MVP and part of the mythical team alongside teammate Cuerbo, Thunderbolts’ Harold Alarcon, Mark Nonoy of Hua Siong College of lloilo and Andre Chua of Sacred Heart-Ateneo de Cebu.

“We really prepared for this game kasi tinambakan nila kami (nung elimination round),” Primes head coach Rodel Camacho said. “So lahat nung nakita naming naging problema nung game, sa offense and defense, trinabaho talaga namin dito sa finals.”

It was recalled that Santa Clarita suffered a 71-95 loss to Tay Tung in the elimination round while, a huge upset on the part of the Bacolod-based team which was successful during the preliminaries, only to fall short in the finals.

Primes and Thunderbolts advanced to the finals of the pocket tournament organized by Iloilo City Mayor Jose Espinosa III after placing at top two at the end of the elimination round.

Sacred Heart-Ateneo de Cebu, meanwhile, claimed the third place trophy following a 71-66 victory over Hua Siong. It also happens to be the school’s lone victory in the tournament after bowed to Hua Siong in the eliminations on overtime, 94-98.*
