Kabankalan airport project gets P90-M boost
The ongoing airport project of the Kabankalan City government got the needed boost with an additional P60 million fund from the Department of Transportation (DOTr) for the concreting of the runway.
Mayor Isidro Zayco said the amount is in addition to the P30 million earmarked last year by DOTr for the runway concreting, making it a total P90 million coming from the national government.
Zayco said the city government of Kabankalan has been working for the realization of the airport for several years now with help from the Negros Occidental provincial government.
The 105-hectare airport, the development of which is financed by the city government of Kabankalan, started in 2007.
Zayco said the provincial government also allocated P30 million for the airport, while the city government of Kabankalan has a standby P50 million budget for it.
All in all, the Kabankalan airport has a total budget now of P170 million for its development, including the P90 million counterpart funds from the national government.
The mayor said he told DOTr to include the P80 million joint budget of Kabankalan and provincial governments.
It is the DOTr that has the expertise and technical know-how in runway concreting, he said.
Kabankalan, the biggest city outside of Negros Occidental capital Bacolod, is considered the gateway to the various tourist sites in southern Negros with its strategic location.* (NDB)
