Bading Takes Lead, To Take Drug Test Today
A senior member of the Sanggunian Panlalawigan (SP) of Negros Occidental is taking the challenge of Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr., for elected official in the province to take a drug test.
Board Member Salvador Escalante confirmed that he will take a drug test early this morning at a private hospital in Bacolod City.
Earlier, Marañon challenged elected officials in Negros Occidental to undergo drug test in answer to the statement of President-elect Rodrigo Duterte that there are 35 local officials nationwide who are into the illegal drug trade.
“Those who will not undergo drug test is questionable,” Marañon said,
However, he does not believe that there are local officials in the province who are involved in the illegal drugs business.
“They may have connections as some may have friends who are in the illegal trade,” he said.
Marañon said he does not know if there are local officials who are drug addicts.
Escalante, an ally of Marañon and the security general of the local party United Negros Alliance said that the proposal for public officials to take a drug test is “a good idea.”
Asked if he will encourage other local officials in the province to follow his lead, he said, “it is not mandatory but it would be a welcome development.”
“It is more of an assurance to the people that their leaders are fit to serve,” Escalante said.
On the other hand, Vice Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said that the Governor has issued the same challenge to local officials last year, “but if my memory serves me right, nothing came out of it.”
Pressed if the SP wants to take the lead in undergoing a drug test, the Vice Governor believes that the legislative body “as group, don’t suspect any of our members to be involved in drugs.”*
