OCD Aims For Zero Casualty During La Niña
The Negros Island Region (NIR), Office of the Civil Defense is aiming for zero casualty as it prepares for the coming of the rainy season, that will be intensified by La Niña.
During the recent meeting of NIR Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) chairperson Blanche Gobenciong called on those situated in low lying areas, along rivers, coastal areas, mountain slopes and other high risk areas to prepare for heavy rains, flooding and landslides.
She told Disaster Risk Reduction officers to prepare the community so that the people will know the importance of preparing for impending dangers.
She said the OCD will work in tandem with other offices and with the DILG in promoting Community Based Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (CBDRRM) and Operation Listo.
Gabenciong also stressed the need for timely information dissemination of weather forecasts to the public.
She said correct information flow of reports from the LGUs all the way to the national office prevents confusion and makes actions of the national and local governments effective.
The OCD is also calling for LGUs and DRR personnel to identify flood and landslide prone areas in their locality to anticipate potential dangers to communities and implement mitigating actions to prevent loss of lives and properties.*(JCM/Lljr-PIA6)
