SAGAY CITY - The 21st Sinigayan Festival slated on March 15-19, 2017 with the theme, “Where love for nature begins” kicked off with the Grand Opening Parade spearheaded by Mayor Alfredo D. Marañon III and Vice Mayor Narciso Javelosa, Jr. with the Sinigayan Foundation President Engr. Primitivo Rivera, Jr., Undersecretary for Local Government Austere A. Panadero of the Department of Interior and Local Government, a native of Brgy. Fabrica, of this city was the Guest of Honor and Speaker during the Opening Program at the city Public Plaza. Gov. Alfredo G. Marañon, Jr. also gave a message. The ribbon cutting and opening of the festival villages followed – Bugay Sagay Agro-Aqua Festival Village, Dagway- Sagay Arts and Culture Village, Tali-ambong Food and Entertainment Village, and Livestock and Poultry Fair Exhibit.

Sagay City Mayor Alfredo D. Marañon III said, “Sagay City is blessed to be the home of the 32,000-hectare protected seascape that shows richness and bio-diversity. We can do so many things to protect it and one way our community can do is their strong support to solid waste management.”

Each village will also have their own unique festival activities showcasing arts and culture with nationally and internationally acclaimed visual artist Nunelucio Alvarado, harvest from the land and sea, local cuisine and livestock and poultry showcasing the best of our Sagaynons can offer.

DepEd Night will also hold Harvest of Excellence Awarding Rites on the 17th while Sagay Sigay Jaycee will co-present the staging of the Sinigayan Queen Pageant 2017 with 9 candidates vying for the crown on the same day. ABC Night will be held on the 18th while Sinigay sa Sagay Saot para sa Dunang Manggad with Hara kag Hari 2017 will be showcased on the 19th with free face painting sponsored by Sagay Water District on strategic areas: Bus Terminal, Dagway Sagay Artist Village, Taliambong Food and Entertainment Village, Ratsada sa Kalsada Area and Sagay Water District.

Pre-festival activities such as “Tinabu-ay Sa Taytay,” a culminating activity of the boy scouts and girl scouts of the city took place at Himoga-an Bridge, a bridge linking barangays Paraiso and Fabrica to remind its residents the importance and value of the bridge to its people. Clean-up drive was conducted and painting of waiting sheds along barangays Paraiso and Fabrica was also undertaken to spruce up sites along the highway. Mayor Marañon led the switch on ceremony with officials of DepEd Division of Sagay City to permanently light the bridge.

Other pre-festival activities such as Voice Idol of Sagay Kids and Teens, Sinigayan Motocross, Offroad Duathlon, Trisikad Race, Bikefest BMX Flatland Competition Chess Tournament, 1st Negros Island Guppywar Championship Competition, Battle of Fresh Bands. In the morning of March 13, a wreath laying and mass for the late Governor Joseph G. Marañon was celebrated by Fr. Erwin Magnanao at their Family Mausoleum to commemorate his 9th death anniversary. Religious activities have also been undertaken with the 9-day novena masses.*
