Sports: Another Sports Spectacle to Commence this Week

negros opinionAnother sports spectacle will begin this week in Roxas City, Capiz for the chance to choose players to compose the Western Visayas delegation to the 2013 Palarong Pambansa in Dumaguete City in April.

The Negros Occidental contingent left yesterday for Capiz to defend majority of the events in a week-long sports hostilities. The opening will take centerstage on Monday and is expected to grace the occasion is Capiz-native Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) secretary, Mar Roxas.

A 500-strong delegation from the province of Negros Occidental will compete with other provinces in Western Visayas, Antique, Aklan, Capiz, Iloilo and Guimaras.

Hope the sports competition among athletes will completely be a sports competition among them, not for those officials of the Department of Education who went with the delegation just for disturbing the athletes and went sight-seeing and window shopping at their expense. Hope the officials will be the one to guide the athletes to be competitive in their chosen events. I also hope this sports competition will not be taken for granted and used for politics as the campaign for national position has already started.

Opinion: Love, the Greatest Gift During Valentine’s Day

Submitted by Pert Toga on Thu, 02/14/2013 - 08:29
  • From Editor-in-Chief

Today being VALENTINE’S DAY is a day for Lovers. But who is a lover? Everyone should be a lover, indeed, otherwise life would be meaningless, colorless, and empty. Isn’t it true that everybody loves a lover, and that it’s better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all?

And, above all, didn’t Christ die for the love of mankind? A man who does not have love in his heart maybe likened to a car without an engine, a tree without its roots, a bird without wings, and cannot fly, or a sinner completely separated from his Creator. How sad, how tragic.

Man’s existence can only be meaningful and pleasant if love is ever present and alive in his heart and mind, in his home and in the hearts and minds of his loved ones, everyday of his/her life, with God in the center of that life.

The brutal killing of Pension house owner Karmen Galo at Lopez Jaena Street last weekend may actually be among the many incidents in the city which have remained in the archives of unsolved cases.

The police declared that they are withholding the suspects’ name pending his arrest.

But they claimed that four witnesses including house staff members Donelyn Diaz, Laura Silhay, the laundry woman and the bell boy had identified the suspect through rogue’s gallery of Police Station 1, according to Station commander, Chief Inspector Noel Polines.

I mentioned this refusal by the police to name the suspect because that seems to become the standard excuse by the police when they cannot solve a major case in the city.

There are several major cases in Bacolod which remain unsolved. The identities of suspects remain unknown. For that matter, Atty. Tan and the suspected triggermen in his assassination remain unsolved because their killers remain unknown and unidentified.

So with several other major cases in the city. Usually, these involved high profile personalities and equally high-profile killers.

Opinion: Villar, a Candidate with a Heart

A BALANCED SENATE. Among the candidates of the ruling party, the Liberal Party in coalition with the Nacionalista Party (NP) and the Nationalist Peoples’ Coalition (NPC) is former Congresswoman and women’s rights advocate Mrs. Cynthia Villar, better-half of senator and former presidential bet Manuel "Manny" Villar, who always teased us during the days he mounted the campaign trail as a look-alike of CPP leader Jose Ma. Sison which he tosses as a joke and which only indicates the human nature of the senator and his wife.

In fact, there are other and many at that, indications of the couple’s being of humane bent and this one, can also distinguish from their advocacies. It is a well-known fact that the Villar couple have established the Villar Foundation engaged in providing the masses with livelihood, providing support and needed assistance to distressed Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) besides being involved in environment advocacy, establishing housing subdivisions and for Mrs. Villar, a staunch advocate of women and human rights.

Here is one situation that I and several others encountered not only once or twice recently.

We guide small groups in Bacolod and in other parts of Negros Occidental in conducting surveys.

While the ones tasked to do the interviews on voters’ election choices are left on their own, our group of field sub-leaders do our own interviews on non-election concerns.

We are not allowed to interview the same people who were already interviewed for their choices of candidates, vice versa.

Piano Tuning is an art, scientific and one of the most complicated job for any technician. To be a Piano Tuner, you have to be a piano technician too, for no piano tuner can tune a piano perfectly and easily if you have sticking keys, broken strings and piano machine (Piano Action) that is defective to contend with. So, when you call for a piano tuning service, be sure you have the right person to do this meticulous job. You can call your piano dealers, piano schools or piano professors, they can recommend a competent and credible Piano Tuner & Technician in the locality.

Fil-Am pointguard Joshua Urbiztondo of Barako Bull became the first recipient of the Accel-PBA Press Corps Player of the Week award after the spitfirish 6-1 sentinel towed the Energy Colas to two straight wins in a span of just three days in the current Commissioner’s Cup wars.

Nicknamed ‘Fire Ball’, the undrafted Philippine Basketball Association player out of Fresno Pacific University has become a journeyman in the pro league having played for four teams in the same number of seasons despite his unorthodox brand of play.

Urbiztondo was signed by the defunct Sta. Lucia Realtors in 2009 where he had the opportunity to play alongside former Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year winner Kelly Williams as well as another ROY winner in Ryan Reyes before the duo were shipped to Talk ‘N Text during the midseason.

Eventually, Meralco took over the Sta.Lucia franchise and Urbiztondo was quickly traded to Air21 together with the Bolts’ third overall rookie pick. At Air21 (renamed Barako Bull), Urbiztondo showed some promise and he even scored 31 markers on 7-of-8 shooting from downtown in a game versus San Miguel Beer (now Petron) they won, 92-87.

At season’s end, B-Meg (now San Mig Coffee) acquired Urbiztondo from his former quintet where he teamed up with James Yap and import Denzel Bowles for the Llamados in helping Coach Tim Cone win the 2011-12 PBA Commissioner’s Cup crown over the Tropang Texters.

Opinion: Ash Wednesday Start of Electoral Campaign

Today, Ash Wednesday, signals the start of the electoral campaign for the 2013 elections. It also signals the start of the 40-day Lenten Season which reminds us, Christians, to examine our conscience and to convert.

Pope Benedict XVI also timed his announcement of his resignation from the Papacy on that day. Actually the eve of Ash Wednesday. It is significant that the head of the Roman Catholic Church had nobly offered to resign from his powerful post because he no longer felt he had the physique nor the mental prowess to ably discharge his duties as pastor of the Church of St. Peter.

Filipino Catholics were not taken by surprise by the papal decision. They had long expected it. The only problem they didn’t know when he would yield his vast powers and responsibilities.

It was also timed with the demise of Lolong, the giant crocodile of Agusan del Norte who died on the eve of Ash Wednesday. That, to a certain extent, may also mean even the earthly beast had succumbed to death as human beings do.
