Be safe this New Year, avoid firecrackers - BFP

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) is urging the public to avoid using firecrackers this New Year to avoid injuries.

Instead, Bacolod Fire Marshall Supt. Rodolfo Denaga suggests the use of alternative instruments that can make noise but are safe.

If ever one wishes to use firecrackers, he should buy from a legitimate source to ensure the quality of the product.

In the city, sellers are located near the Pope John Paul Tower where the combined team from the BFP, DTI , PNP and others are keeping a close watch to ensure the safety of buyers and sellers.

Firecrackers should only be used in the barangay-designated firecracker zone, he said.

The public is also discouraged from storing firecrackers at home.

Denaga suggests further that a firecracker that did not light up after 30 seconds should not be re-ignited. Rather, it should be doused with water.

The BFP is urging barangays to hold a fire drill before New Year in coordination with their office.

He said this is to better prepare the community in anticipation of an unexpected incident and the BFP is willing to help in the conduct of the activity.*(PIA)
