Inmate Manhandled Dies in Bacolod District Jail at Handumanan
A man charged of estafa and remitted to Bacolod Metro District Jail in Barangay Handumanan, Bacolod City was allegedly manhandled by his fellow inmates causing his death at dawn Friday.
But jail officials told his family that Otonil Navarro, “Alias Banong”, 42, of Barangay Felisa here died of “bangungot” or cardiac arrest.
Navarro was arrested October 2 for estafa, and was only remitted on Thursday and reportedly died at night of the same day. His family was informed only few hours later when the victim was already in the hospital. He was declared dead on arrival.
The victim’s wife Rossini, a casual employee at Bacolod City government reported the incident only about 11:15 Friday morning at Police Station 10 and urged investigation of the case.
The victim sustained hematoma and signs of being manhandled. Police Station 10 investigator recommends the victim to be autopsied by Bacolod City medico-legal officer, Dr. Eli Cong.
Jail Inspector Richard Silvano, OIC jail warden has not issued statement on the death of Lavaro and reportedly brought the still unidentified suspect to Bacolod District Jail at Bacolod City Police Office (BCPO) in Barangay Taculing Friday.* (CMG)
