Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes to Visit Manila in January

A Vatican official is set to attend the 98th Plenary Assembly at the Pope Pius XVII Catholic Center in Manila from January 24 to 25, where he is expected to talk about Church teachings and his experiences and in the field of Catholic Charity.

Cardinal Paul Josef Cordes, president of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, is scheduled to arrive in the country on January 22, according to an article posted on the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) website.

Aside from attending the bishops’ assembly, his itinerary includes a visit to the University of Santo Tomas (UST) on Jan. 23.

Being the head of the Vatican council that oversees the Church’s charitable activities around the world, his duty is to make sure Catholic teaching on charity
becomes concrete.

Before being appointed head of Cor Unum in 1995, he was vice president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity.

Archbishop Cordes’ work and his approach to Catholic charity was recognized with the publication of Pope Benedict XVI’s 2005 encyclical, “Deus Caritas Est” (“God Is Love”), particularly its section underlining the link between Christian faith and charitable activity.

The agency also has a secretary, undersecretary, 38 members and nine consultors, all appointed for five-year terms, including a permanent staff of nine.

Among the consultors is former Philippine ambassador to the Vatican Henrietta de Villa who heads both the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (PPCRV) and the National Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel).* (PNA)
