November is National Children’s Month
Series of activities are designed for the month-long celebration of National Children’s Month this November by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), with its theme, Bata Iligtas sa Druga. The celebration is giving emphasis on the giving of solid resources to kids. Children identified in this program are those in ages 13 to 17 years old.
According to Pacita Tero, head of DSWD-Bacolod, statistics show that there is tremendous increase of children who are either courier or user of illegal drugs.
Few of the activities set by the City DSWD are: meeting with street gangs and gathering them at the BAYS Center for forum and games on November 18.
There will be talent contest on November 15-16 at the BAYS Center to be participated in by children from the North, South and Central Bacolod. On November 17 is the city-wide show of children at the BAYS Center for various talent performances. Whoever wins in this activity will represent Bacolod City in the regional competition at Iloilo City on November 29. There will be forum advocacy on drug abuse with parents of day care children.
Presently, according to Ms. Tero, DSWD has been receiving reports about hardwares selling rugby in little amounts to children, as well as to mentally retarded persons roaming the thoroughfares nude. The problem is that DSWD has no facility where they could house them.*(Edith B. Colmo)
