Mustangs Rule Over Thunderbolts in NOPSSCEA Basketball, 104-90
The STI-West Negros University (WNU) Junior Mustangs ruled over Bacolod Tay Tung High School (BTTHS) Thunderbolts, 104-90 as they successfully defended their NOPSSCEA secondary boys’ title.

John Paul Malayas sizzled with 10 points including 3 treys to spearhead the Mustangs 27-21 run in the opening quarter as Austine Laureño and Philip John Majometaño added 5 points each with a triple apiece while Fritz Tagamolila hit 6 points.
The Dennis Tumayan-mentored Junior Mustangs continue their dominance in the second period as Aldave Dale Canoy powered his way in the shaded area with 10 points as Dave Agbas and Majometaño added 3 points apiece. Andy John Villamer, on the other hand, kept the Thunderbolts in the game with 8 points as Christian Gamao added 6 markers. Mustangs led the half-time with 50-41.
But, Mustangs defense hurt Dexter Dy’s Thunderbolts in the third quarter with limited 13 points while the former hit 25 markers behind Canoy’s 7 points as Bon Brix Balontong, Laureño and Majometaño nailed 4 triples combined. The STI-WNU side extended their advantage to a comfortable 75-54 going into the playoff period.
The Thunderbolts surged to a 36-29 run in the final period as Alarcon knocked 4 triples while Ralph Allen Cagalawan and Andy John Villamer fired 9 and 8 points apiece. But, their efforts weren’t enough to steal the spotlight as Canoy delivered Mustangs’ final ditch with 10 points.
Canoy anchored the Junior Mustangs balanced scoring with 28 points as Laureño and Majometaño added 14 points apiece, Agbas hit 13 points, Malayas hit 12 points, and Balongtong with 9 points.
On the other hand, Villamer led Thunderbolts with 21 points, Alarcon with 16 points, Cagalawan with 12 points as Gamao and Tagamolila with 8 points each.
The win earned STI-WNU the opportunity to represent NOPSSCEA in next month’s Palarong Panlalawigan.*
