Guv Cup Boxing Tourney Opens Today in Sagay
The 8th Governor Alfredo Marañon, Jr., Cup Open Boxing Tournament finals will open today at Sagay Gym in Sagay City, 1PM.
The tournament was re-scheduled from its original week from October 15 to 21 because of unavailability of billeting quarters, according to the president of the Negros Occidental Sports Coordinator and at the same time the sports coordinator of Sagay City, Mr. Benzon Fernandez.
This is because of non available billeting centers that can accommodate hundred of boxers from the province and also from Negros Oriental to participate.
Hundreds of boxers from eight districts, including Bacolod City were already at the venue Sunday, including from Bayawan City and Dumaguete City.
They will vie for different categories. Yesterday, weigh-ins and medical examination was done by Provincial Health Office.
Expected to grace the occasions were Governor Alfredo Maranon, and Sagay City Mayor Alfredo Maranon III.
The boxers and officiating officials were treated in “welcome night” at Balay Kauswagan by the city officials.
Provincial Sports Coordinator and Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) Western Visayas President and Executive Assistant to the governor, Angel “Nonong” Verdeflor will supervise the tournament.
The 7th Governor’s Cup Boxing tournament was held last year in Pontevedra, Negros Occidental.
Boxers from the 6tht District of Negros Occidental ran away with the over-all championship, dislodging many times champion First District and followed by the 3rd District as runner-up.
The weeklong tournament will be sponsored by the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental through the Provincial Sports Office, City Government of Sagay through Mayor Alfredo Maranon lll, Philippine Sports Commission, and Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) and the Negros First Sports, Sports Coordinators Association of Negros Occidental headed by Mr. Benzon Fernandez.
He said that the Negros First Boxing Team has already produced boxers joining in the Philippine Team, who used to be champions in the previous Governor’s Cup Boxing Tournament.* (Cyrus M. Garde)
