Sen. Cynthia Villar
Sen. Cynthia A. Villar, Chairperson of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Food, has confirmed her attendance as the keynote speaker during the formal opening of the 61st Annual National Convention on August 13, 2014 at the Waterfront Hotel, Lahug, Cebu City.
This was disclosed yesterday by Philsutech Corporate Secretary and Administrative Manager Haydee Villanueva-Rivera who heads the Philsutech Secretariat in the preparations for the convention which runs from August 12-15.
Philsutech officers and members expect Villar to discuss legislative measures to help the sugar industry, particularly the status of the Senate version of the Sugarcane Industry Development Act which was originally proposed in the Lower House by Rep. Albee Benitez (3rd District-Negros Occ.).
The bill aims to generate funds to strengthen the competitiveness and boost the diversification efforts of the sugarcane industry when tariff on imported sugar drops to a nominal 5 percent by 2015.
It can be recalled that Sen. Villar presided a public hearing on the bill last November 14, 2013 in Bacolod City. The hearing was attended by Agriculture Sec. Proceso Alcala, Sugar Regulatory Administrator Ma. Regina B. Martin and industry leaders and stakeholders.
Martin will also address the Philsutech members on the second day of the convention which is the only national event where all industry stakeholders gather under one roof to discuss the latest technological breakthroughs and recent developments worldwide affecting the industry.
